On 31 January 1968, during the initial phase of Operation HUE CITY Sergeant Gonzalez's unit was formed as a reaction force and deployed to Hue to relieve the pressure on the beleaguered city. While moving by truck convoy along Route #1, near the village of Lang Van Lrong, the marines received a heavy volume of enemy fire. Sergeant Gonzalez aggressively maneuvered the marines in his platoon, and directed their fire until the area was cleared of snipers. Immediately after crossing the river south of Hue, the column was again hit by intense enemy fire. One of the marines on top of a tank was wounded and fell to the ground in an exposed position. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Gonzalez ran through the fire-swept area to the assistance of his injured comrade. He lifted him up and though receiving fragmentation wounds during the rescue, he carried the wounded marine to a covered position for treatment. Due to the increased volume and accuracy of enemy fire from a fortified machine gun bunker on the side of the road, the company was temporarily halted. Realizing the gravity of this situation, Sergeant Gonzalez exposed himself to the enemy fire and moved his platoon along the east side of a bordering rice paddy to a dike directly across from the bunker. Though fully aware of the danger involved, he moved to the fire-swept road and destroyed the hostile position with hand grenades. Although seriously wounded again on 3 February, he steadfastly refused medical treatment and continued to supervise his men and lead the attack. On 4 February, the enemy had again pinned the company down, inflicting heavy casualties with automatic weapons and rocket fire, Sergeant Gonzalez, utilizing a number of light antitank assault weapons, fearlessly moved from position to position firing numerous rounds at the heavily fortified enemy emplacements. He successfully knocked out a rocket position and suppressed much of the enemy fire before falling mortally wounded. The heroism, courage, and dynamic leadership displayed by Sergeant Gonzalez reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country. /S/ RICHARD M. He sailed from Hamburg and entered the United States on September 5, 1854 via New York. He settled in St. Louis, Missouri, becoming a prominent builder, married Maria Agnes Ulrich on April 13, 1858 and became a naturalized citizen of the United States on September 21, 1868 in St. Louis. He died in St. Louis in April 1905. His brother, Charles Riewe, was born in Germany in 1827 and entered the United States in June 1854 via New York. He moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin and declared before the Court, that he was denouncing his Prussian citizenship and intended to become an American citizen on February 28, 1859. He later fought under Colonel Henry Bertram, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War. Henry Bertram was a Prussian immigrant, who served in both the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. Bertram was baptized Emil Gustav Victor Beeger. He arrived in the United States about 1840 after serving as a cabin boy aboard a Prussian ship. At the age of 20, he enlisted in the United States Army and fought in the Mexican-American War. He was promoted to sergeant on August 21, 1846, yet was charged with desertion on January 20, 1851, a charge that was posthumously removed from his record. After his Mexican-American War service, Beeger sailed to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he married his first wife. In 1856 they returned to New York and eventually relocated to Watertown, Wisconsin, where he enlisted in a local militia called the Watertown Rifles. Beeger enlisted in Co. A, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on April 18, 1861, less than a week after the attack on Fort Sumter. He enrolled under the name Henry Bertram, perhaps to Anglicize his German surname. Bertram was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of the 3rd Infantry on May 1, 1861, before it left Wisconsin, and to Captain on September 24, 1861, after it reached the front near Washington, D.C. Over the next nine months, Bertram’s company fought in nine battles in Virginia. On July 1, 1862, Bertram was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 20th Wisconsin Infantry. When the regiment fought at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, on December 7, 1862, Bertram's horse was shot from under him and he was wounded. He was promoted to full Colonel later that month. In June 1863, his regiment participated in the Siege of Vicksburg. In October, it sailed to the mouth of the Rio Grande and blockaded a shipment of Mexican goods intended for Confederate soldiers. Near the end of the war, Bertram was brevetted a Brigadier General for his meritorious services during the war. He was mustered out of service on July 14, 1865. Bertram returned to Watertown on August 1, 1865, and entered politics. He was elected mayor of Watertown in 1870 and served as Dodge County Sheriff until 1872. He later moved to Juneau, Wisconsin, where he was a merchant and hotel keeper. He died suddenly on September 2, 1878 and is buried in the Juneau city cemetery.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0713/9105/2053/files/img_02_f36042a8-42bb-4ea2-a5fd-fc9c90756232.jpg?v=1692848396
a-first-war-american-purple-heart-award-document-w2515
A First War American Purple Heart Award Document
A First War American Purple Heart Award Document - Dated 21st September 1959 for wounds received in action 27 September 1918 in France; Awarded to Nick Gennie 2 272 707 Saddler Company A, 316th Engineers; previously framed, fine overall.
A WWI Map of the Western Front Named to American Flyer - Map obverse printed in four-colour ink (red, blue, yellow and black), entitled "Kenyon's Map of the Western Battle Front", tagged "Copyright 1918" and manufactured by "The Kenyon Co., Map Makers, Des Moines, Iowa", with fold lines. He attained one year of high school education and was a resident of Suffolk County when he enlisted as a Private (11027486) with the United States Army on May 12, 1941 at Boston, Massachusetts, stating that he was Single. Private Herbert Baker served with the United States Army Coast Artillery Corps, 60th Coastal Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), "D" (Denver) Battery in the Philippines theater during the Second World War. "D" (Denver) Battery was an anti-aircraft battery consisting of four guns. 11027486 Private Herbert Baker was taken prisoner on Corregidor in the Philippines and was subsequently held as a Prisoner of War at a camp in Puerto Princesa on the island of Palawan. Following the military defeats in the Philippines, on August 1, 1942, 346 POWs still located in the Philippines were sent to Palawan Island for the purpose of constructing an airfield for the Japanese. Two years later, in September 1944, 159 American POWs were sent back to Manila because the Japanese thought that the remaining 150 survivors would be able to finish the airfield. Due to the ongoing presence of Allied aircraft in the area, on Thursday, December 14, 1944, the Japanese sighted an American convoy and mistakenly believed that it was bound for Palawan. In order to prevent the rescue of prisoners of war by what the Japanese perceived as the advancing Allies, units of the Japanese Fourteenth Area Army (under the command of General Tomoyuki Yamashita) brought the POWs back to their own camp. During an air raid warning, the 150 prisoners of war at Puerto Princesa were ordered by the Japanese to be placed in three wooden air raid shelters. Japanese soldiers then set the trenches on fire using barrels of gasoline, which were ignited by flaming torches and hand grenades. As the American POW’s, now engulfed in flames, broke out of the fiery death traps, their Japanese guards machine gunned, bayoneted, decapitated and clubbed them to death, including Private Baker, who died at the age of 26. Other POWs attempted to escape by climbing over a cliff that ran along one side of the trenches, but were later hunted down and killed. Only 11 men escaped the slaughter, the other 139 were killed. Bones from the victims were discovered in early 1945, with the remains of 123 victims, of what came to be known as the Palawan Massacre, were later interred at the United States Air Force Cemetery Leyte #1 in the Philippines. In 1952, upon Administrative Decision, the remains were exhumed and sent to the United States, to be re-interred in a mass grave in Section 85, Site 14-66, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. A new marker was dedicated at the site in 2003 to honor the victims, with Baker's name appearing as the second name from the top of the second of four columns. In addition, the Palawan Massacre Memorial by artist Don Schloat, a former POW of the Japanese at Palawan, was erected in the Philippines. The Palawan Massacre sparked a series of POW rescue campaigns by the United States, such as the raid at Cabanatuan on January 30, 1945, the raid at Santo Tomas Internment Camp on February 3, 1945, the raid of Bilibid Prison on February 4, 1945, and raid at Los Baños on February 23, 1945. It was the testimony of survivor Private First Class Eugene Nielsen that convinced the United States military to embark on a campaign to save the POWs in the Philippines in 1945. Sixteen Japanese soldiers were tried for the massacre in Yokohama, Japan in August 1948. The Japanese personnel involved in the massacre were initially sentenced to death, but later, they were released in the general amnesty.

Inside panel printed in red and black inks, illustrating a map of south-east France and western Italy, various place names on the map with illustrations of Black Devils attacking those areas, cartooned Germans along with other representations adjoining the place names, lower left of the map with a Black Devil peering in from the left margin with the unit's insignia to the right, inscribed "Black Devils" above and "First Special Service Force" below the insignia, with a ribbon banner across the insignia inscribed "Season Greetings", inscribed "V...-MAIL" below the map, marked "U.S. GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE 1943 16-28143-4" at the lower right, address panel at the top with a place designated for the censor's stamp and inscribed "CHRISTMAS 1944", outside panel printed in red ink with an address panel entitled "V...-MAIL" facing tail-to-tail with an Instructions panel, measuring 117 mm x 149 mm when folded and 235 mm x 280 mm when fully opened, light tearing exhibited on the glue tab, extremely fine.

Footnote: V-mail, short for Victory Mail, was a hybrid mail process used during the Second World War in the United States, as the primary and secure method to correspond with soldiers stationed abroad. Clement worked as a clerk in the business office of Clement and Sons Marble, the family business and a prominent company in Rutland County. He became a partner in 1871 and was also president of the Clement National Bank and the Rutland Board of Trade, along with being an owner of numerous railroad interests. A Republican, Clement served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1892 to 1893, and helped secure the charter for Rutland City to incorporate separately from Rutland Town. He served as Mayor of Rutland City from 1897 to 1898, and was succeeded by William Y. W. Ripley. Clement served in the Vermont Senate from 1900 to 1901, and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1902 and 1906, in the latter year as a Democrat. From 1911 to 1912, Clement served again as Rutland's Mayor. In 1912, he was chairman of the New England Railroad Conference Commission. The following year, he served on the Vermont Educational Commission, and in 1917, he was a member of the executive committee of the Vermont Committee of Public Safety. Elected in 1918, Clement served as Governor of Vermont from January 9, 1919 to January 6, 1921. During his term, the state legislature appropriated one million dollars to pay military draftees. He opposed women's suffrage and Prohibition, but Vermont ratified the Prohibition Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Clement also pardoned his predecessor as governor, Horace F. Graham, who had been convicted of embezzlement while serving as State Auditor. When his term of office ended, he returned to his business affairs. Brigadier General Herbert Thomas Johnson (January 27, 1872 - November 4, 1942) was a military officer who served as Adjutant General of the Vermont National Guard. He was veteran of the Spanish-American War, serving with the 1st Vermont Volunteer Infantry. Johnson retired from the National Guard in 1915, but remained active in the Vermont State Guard, a volunteer home guard organization. In 1917, he was appointed to organize and command the 1st Vermont Militia Regiment, a home guard unit. Later that year, he was appointed acting Adjutant General, succeeding Lee Stephen Tillotson, who resigned to join the regular Army for service in the First World War. Johnson served as Adjutant General throughout the war, and was responsible for mobilizing and transporting National Guard members, enlistees and draftees from Vermont to initial entry centers for in processing and training before departing for France. He also oversaw operations of the home guard which assumed many of the Vermont National Guard's duties while the National Guard was overseas. Following the war, Johnson and his staff were also responsible for receiving newly discharged soldiers back in Vermont, and for reorganizing the National Guard.

a-bronze-star-award-document-to-technician-fifth-grade-james-v-roberson-16th-infantry-regiment-rhineland-campaign-w5334
A Bronze Star Award Document, To Technician Fifth Grade James V. He received the Medal of Honor for his service in the American Civil War in 1872 but it was rescinded in 1917 when supporting documentation was not found. As a Judge Advocate in the United States Army, he prosecuted the case of Johnson Chesnut Whittaker, a black cadet at West Point. He was elected New York County District Attorney in 1897, but was put on trial for corruption, and despite acquittal, was removed from office by Theodore Roosevelt in 1900. He refused to prosecute the corrupt Tammany Hall bosses of New York City, proclaiming ""The hell with reform!"" (or ""Reform be damned!""). In 1877, Gardiner joined the Society of the Cincinnati, a military society founded by officers who had served in the American Revolution and perpetuated by their descendants. Gardiner was a key figure the re-establishment of the Rhode Island Society of the Cincinnati, which had been dormant since 1835. In 1878, Gardiner was elected as the Rhode Island Society's Assistant Secretary. Gardiner joined the Society by right of his descent from his great uncle, Lieutenant Jonathan Willard (1744-1832). Although Lieutenant Willard was a veteran of the 1st New Hampshire Regiment, and the Society has a tradition of members joining the state Society which their ancestor was eligible to join, the Rhode Island Society had an exception in its membership requirements to admit members who were descendants of officers whose state did not have an active society. As New Hampshire did not have an active society in 1877, Gardiner was permitted to join the Rhode Island Society.

Gardiner was elected Secretary General of the National Society in 1884 and, in the same year, authored Precedents and Ordinances of the General Society of the Cincinnati. Through his efforts to recruit new members, define policies and establish administrative procedures, he was probably the single person most responsible for the rejuvenation for the Society of the Cincinnati in the late Nineteenth Century. Gardiner was elected president of the Rhode Island Society following at a special meeting of the Rhode Island Society on December 14, 1899 which was called as a result of the death of President Nathanael Greene, M.D. (b. 1809) (the grandson of General Nathanael Greene) on July 8, 1899. Gardiner remained president of the Rhode Island Society, as well as Secretary General of the national Society, until his death in 1919. In the 41 years that Gardiner was active in the Society, it grew greatly both in membership and prestige and all of the dormant state societies were rejuvenated. Gardiner was highly involved in the planning for the dedication of a statue of the French nobleman Rochambeau in Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C. on May 24, 1902. The ceremony involved an official delegation from France, senior officers the United States Army and Navy, as well as the Society of the Cincinnati. President Theodore Roosevelt gave the keynote address at the ceremony. In 1905 the Rhode Island Society published The Order of the Cincinnati in France, which Gardiner wrote. The 243 page volume contains detailed biographies of all the senior officers of the French Army who served in America during the revolution.

Shipping Footnote: Please note that there will be an additional shipping charge during or post time of purchase.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967.
