A framed, signed, black and white painted portrait of Alexander of Tunis, featuring him in military attire, portrait by Arnold Birley 1946, on a matte border which has been signed in black ink, set in a wooden frame, the reverse with a partial paper covering, horizontal wire for hanging, measures 30.5 mm (w) x 39 cm (h) x 1.5 cm (d), light wear, very fine condition.
Footnote: Harold Alexander (1891–1969) was a senior British Army officer and one of the most prominent Allied commanders of the Second World War. Educated at Harrow and Sandhurst, he served with distinction in the First World War before rising to high command in the next conflict. Alexander played a key role in the North African campaign, overseeing the final defeat of Axis forces in Tunisia, and later commanded the 15th Army Group during the Italian campaign. Known for his calm leadership and diplomatic skill, he was popular among both British and Allied troops. After the war, he served as Governor General of Canada from 1946 to 1952, further cementing his reputation as a respected imperial statesman.
