Footnote: Robert Warner was born in 1879, in Benham, Newbury. He married Rose Emma Jackson in 1907. Robert served with the British Red Cross during the First War. He was overseas from January 2 1918 until February 1, 1919.
The family emigrated to Canada in 1934 via the SS Ausonia, ultimately residing in Hamilton, Ontario. Reginald Robert Warner was born in England in 1908. In 1940, he married Helmi Ashmund in North Bay, Ontario.
Reginald served with the No. 1 Provost Company during the Second War. He was mentioned in despatches on July 29, 1944 for gallant and distinguished services.
The citation for his British Empire Medal, awarded December 15, 1945 states:
“Company quartermaster-Sergeant Warner has been with 1 Provost Company, Canadian Provost Corps throughout the campaigns of 1 Canadian Infantry Division in Sicily, Italy and North West Europe. At all times he has discharged his duties with such energy, deviation and unselfishness that he has imbued the men of No 1 Provost Company with a spirit of sincere loyalty to their arm of the service. His devotion to duty and consideration for his men is held in the highest esteem by all. An Example of company Quartermaster-Sergeant Warner’s fine work was during the preparatory phase for the assault on Bagnacavallo, Italy by 1 Canadian Infantry Division. One of the forward sections of No 1 Provost Company was manning two all night traffic points only a few hundred yards from German forward defended localities. The pointsmen were constantly under machine gun and mortar fire. Company Quartermaster-Sergeant Warner at great personal risk visited the pointsmen and thus encouraged them to carry out their duty in a manner which brought credit to the company. Company Quartermaster-Sergeant Warner took over his present appointment on 7 February 1945 and since that time he has never relaxed in his effort to discharge his duties to the utmost of his ability. Whenever a bridge or traffic point was subject to mortar or shell fire he made it his duty to visit that point solely to reassure the pointsmen.”
