His assigned regimental number was \"5736\" but was issued \"16\" for the South African expedition. After the war, he returned to Canada, working for the Richelieu Woollen Mills in Chambly-Canton. In September 1904, he was in correspondence with Colonel B.H. Vidal, Acting Adjutant General at Militia Headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario. He felt that he was entitled to the Queen's South Africa Medal and inquired as to how he would go about getting it. Colonel Vidal explained the process and required documents necessary, in order to confirm Willett's request. Officially impressed: LIEUT: A.L. HOWARD, R.CANDN.DGNS. Polished, edge nicks and contact marks, suspension tightened, nearly very fine. HOWARD, Arthur L, Major, entered the Canadian Military Forces, and served in the South African War. He was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 27 September 19011: \"A L Howard, Major, Canadian Contingent. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa\". The Insignia, Warrant, etc, were sent to his son, N G Howard, 18 December 1901, as Major Howard had been killed in action not long after the DSO had been awarded to him.He took part in Riel?s Rebellion, 1885. Louis Riel, having escaped after the collapse of his first rebellion in 1870, returned to Canada at the request of the Metis (former trappers, small traders, etc., and mostly of mixed blood) who asked him to help redress their grievances against the Dominion Government. The ensuing campaign to suppress Riel?s (Second) Rebellion was a short one, confined to the year 1885, and ended with the defeat of the rebels at Batoche in May. The government?s forces were commanded by General Middleton and amongst them was Lieut Arthur Howard, formerly an officer in the United States Army but resident in Canada since 1880. Engaged in the armaments business, he was trying to interest the Canadian Government in the Gatling Gun just as the rebellion broke out and so he immediately volunteered to support Middleton with two of his guns. In fact, one gun was turned over to another unit but Howard and his remaining gun played a decisive role in the four day battle of Batoche. Time and again he saved the regular troops from collapse and he emerged from the fighting with a legendary reputation and the sobriquet ?Gat? which remained with him for the rest of his life. In view of at least one expert, Batoche was the most important battle fought on the North American continent in which the Gatling Gun proved to be the decisive weapon. Following this theory to its logical conclusion, it is no surprise that the man behind that single gun at Batoche became a Canadian folk-hero overnight. During the Boer War, he volunteered for service after war broke out and served with various Canadian units until given command of a corps of scouts, the Canadian Scouts. He was commended for his actions several times but that recorded on 7 July 1900 was perhaps the most typical of the hero of Batoche. Lt Col Anderson, Commanding 1st MI Corps, reported: \"I would again bring this officer?s name to notice as having done exceptionally good work with his Machine Gun. At Leewburg on 7th July, Lt. Howard took his gun up into the firing line? and very materially assisted in keeping the enemy back. When the line was outflanked and compelled to retire, Lt. Howard, having had his own horse, his Sergt.?s horse and the gun horse hit, also the gun carriage hit twice, took the Gun off the carriage and walked away with it under his arm?Lt. Howard?s coolness in action is remarkable and he and his gun are always to be relied upon?..\" This kind of bravado occasionally however brought him into conflict with authority and when Col. Lessard reprimanded him for disobeying orders and thereby endangering his life, Howard retorted that \"he was quite prepared to give his life; that the war could not be won by remaining in camp; and that he did not believe in inaction\" [source: Hilder papers]. Hilder goes on to state that \"he was, eventually killed on 17 February 1901 when he, and some of his men of the Canadian Scouts, were caught in an ambush. He would not surrender and kept on firing until he had used up the last of his ammunition\".","brand":"eMedals","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46109721624853,"sku":"C0133","price":5500.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0713\/9105\/2053\/files\/c4790002.jpg?v=1692840553"},{"product_id":"group-of-four-c0129","title":"Group Of Four","description":"Queen?s South Africa Medal, three clasps: Cape Colony; Orange Free State; Transvaal; impressed (32961 DVR. Footnote: Constable William Gray was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and was recruited by Stathcona's Horse for service in South Africa. He signed on as a recruit on January 26, 1900 at Lethbridge, Alberta and was accepted for service on February 10. Although no birthdate was recorded, he stated his age for the record as 30 months, 10 years, that he was single and that he had had nine years service with the North-West Mounted Police (later the Royal Canadian Mounted Police). The regiment was one of the last in the British Empire to be created and raised by a private individual, Donald Alexander Smith, 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal. During the Boer War, Lord Strathcona recruited and equipped the cavalry regiment at his own expense for service in South Africa. Many skilled horsemen (cowboys and North-West Mounted Police members) enlisted, allowing for a short training period and rapid deployment to South Africa. The 537 officers and men, as well as 599 horses, of the new regiment sailed from Halifax on March 18, 1900 and arrived in Cape Town on April 10. Along with The Royal Canadian Dragoons, the regiment won renown for their scouting skills. William Gray was made a Corporal with the Strathcona's Horse and served for six months in the South African theatre, before he had to be invalided to England on October 13, 1900. Upon examination in Halifax, Nova Scotia on February 5, 1901, it was determined that he was invalided, as he had sustained an injury to his right foot and leg, which was caused by falling on the leg, bending it and delivering a fracture of the tarsal bones. He also badly strained the ligaments of the knee and hip, thereby preventing him from returning, at least in the short term, to his duties with the NWMP. He had been a veteran of the Indian theatre, as evidenced by mentioned in his medical records of taking ill with Enteric Fever (Typhoid Fever) in India in 1893. He also is documented as having endured a bout of Rheumatic Fever in Malta in 1898. He fought in the Boer War as a Private with the Lancashire Fusiliers, earning both the QSA and KSA. He signed his CEF Attestation Paper on March 30, 1915 in Amherst, Nova Scotia, with the 6th Mounted Rifle Battalion, naming his next-of-kin as his wife, Annie Smith of Saint John, New Brunswick, stating that he had had previous military service with the 21st Royal Scots Fusiliers, that he was part of an Active Militia, that he was married and that his trade was that of Brass Moulder. The Mounted Rifle Battalion was organized on March 15, 1915 at Amherst, Nova Scotia. He was soon transferred to the 55th Infantry Battalion before leaving Canada on June 18, 1915. Upon arrival in England, he was taken on strength by the 12th Reserve Battalion on June 29th, before entering the French theatre on August 28th and being transferred to the 1st Infantry Battalion. Smith was in Europe for almost three years before he was wounded on July 7, 1918 and admitted to No. 2 Field Ambulance the following day with fractured ribs on his right side. He was transferred to No. 2 Canadian General at Le Treport on July 12th, before being invalided to England aboard the S.S. Aberdonian, arriving at No. 4 General Hospital at Basingstoke, Hants on July 17th. After three weeks, he was moved to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Red Cross Hospital, Coodon Camp at Bexhill on August 6, 1918, where he was also diagnosed with Senile Debility (a term previously used to describe Senility = the mental and physical deterioration associated with aging). He was suffering from poor eyesight and complaining of frequent headaches, with some radial hardening evident and his muscular development noted as \"fair\". There was definitely some discrepancy in his age, as it was noted in his Proceedings of a Medical Board Report, dated August 29, 1918 at Cooden Camp, that he was 51 years old. After recovery and medical assessment, he was discharged to duty the following week, on September 6th. He was later placed \"on command\" to the 2nd Canadian Command Depot at Witley on November 16th, with a \"Debility\". It was noted in his Medical Report, dated November 18, 1918 at A.D.M.S. Headquarters, Canadian Troops, that he would require a minimum of six months recovery. The decision was made to attach him to the Canadian Command Depot at Buxton on November 26th for return to Canada. He embarked England on December 7th aboard the S.S. Olympic, arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia on the 14th, where he was taken on strength of the Casualty Company. He took the next two weeks as leave (December 15, 1918 to January 3, 1919), before being transferred on February 5, 1919 to No. 7 District Depot in Fredericton, New Brunswick. It was here that he was discharged upon demobilization on February 8th. He was credited with seven months at home and thirty-six months in the field, having served in Canada, England and France.
