(Real y Militar Orden de San Hermenegildo). Instituted by King Ferdinand VII on November 28, 1814. King Alfonso XIII’s period (1902-1931). A faceted ball-tipped Maltese Cross in silver gilt, with cluster of seven cut silver rays in each quadrant, obverse centre exhibiting a riding figure of St. Hermenegild in silver gilt, on an enameled dark-blue background, surrounded by the inscription PREMIO A LA CONSTANCIA MILITAR (Award for Military Constancy), as well as by an enameled green laurel wreath, both in silver gilt, reverse with central pin assembly flanked by two stays, measuring 61.88 mm (w) x 61.66 mm (h), presenting mayor toned silver, fine.
Footnote: The Royal and Military Order of St. Hermenegildo was established by King Ferdinand VII on November 28, 1814, after the end of the Peninsular War. It was founded in recognition of Spanish and foreign military personnel who defeated the Napoleonic army, after four year of conflict, and reconstituted Ferdinand's VII reign. It was the first Spanish military Order awarded for length of services.
