Stubbs VC, Lancashire Fusiliers (1506 SJT. F.E. STUBBS. LAN. FUS.); and Victory Medal to Sergeant J.S. Stubbs, Royal Artillery (L-41401 SJT. J.E. STUBBS. R.A.). Naming is officially impressed. Un-mounted, oxidation evident on the former, contact marks and gilt wear on both, near very fine and very fine, respectively. Accompanied by four colour photographs of a memorial wall with names of the recipients of the Victoria Cross from all countries, with that of Sergeant F.E. Stubbs highlighted.

Footnote: Victoria Cross recipient Sergeant Frank Edward Stubbs was born on March 12, 1888 in Kennington, London. He enlisted in the Army as a Boy soldier and served with the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers in India before his First World War service. He was a native of Walworth, London, when his First World War service began with the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers and was sent to the Middle Eastern front, specifically the Dardanelles. Stubbs was one of the regiment's famous "Six V.C.'s Before Breakfast" and was awarded a Victoria Cross for leading his leadership in getting his men through the wire and up the cliffs as part of the "Lancashire Landings" at W Beach during the Gallipoli Campaign on April 25, 1915. He was killed later in the day while making the assault on his company's final objective and his body was never recovered. 1506 Sergeant Frank Edward Stubbs, 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, died of his wounds on April 25, 1915, at the age of 27 and was the only fatal casualty of the six Victoria Cross recipients of the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. He is remembered with honour on the Helles Memorial, Turkey, Panel 58 to 72 or 218 to 219. The Helles Memorial stands on the tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula. It takes the form of an obelisk over thirty metres high that can be seen by ships passing through the Dardanelles. Stubbs was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously, his citation appearing in the Third Supplement to the London Gazette 29985 of Tuesday, March 13, 1917, dated Thursday, March 15, 1917, page 2619: "On the 25th April, 1915, headquarters and three companies of the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, in effecting a landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula to the West of Cape Helles, were met by very deadly fire from hidden machine guns, which caused a great number of casualties. The survivors, however, rushed up to and cut the wire entanglements, notwithstanding the terrific fire from the enemy, and after overcoming supreme difficulties, the cliffs were gained and the position maintained. Amongst the many very gallant officers and men engaged in this most hazardous undertaking, Captain Bromley, Serjeant Stubbs, and Corporal Grimshaw have been selected by their comrades as having performed the most signal acts of bravery and devotion to duty." The Victoria Cross was presented to his mother in a private ceremony in the ballroom at Buckingham Palace on May 2, 1917 and is owned by the Lancashire Fusiliers Regimental Museum. The citation for Captain (Temporary Major) Cuthbert Bromley (since drowned), 1506 Sergeant Frank Edward Stubbs (since died of wounds), and 2609 Corporal (later Sergeant) John E. Grimshaw was not issued until March 15, 1917, due to War Office regulations and red tape. The citation for Captain Richard Raymond Willis, 1293 Sergeant Alfred Richards, and 1809 Private William Kennealy, worded identically, had been previously issued on August 23, 1915. It was also noted in that same Third Supplement to the London Gazette 29985 of Tuesday, March 13, 1917, dated Thursday, March 15, 1917, page 2619, that in "Consequent of the award of the Victoria Cross, the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to No. 2609 Sjt. John Grimshaw, 1st Bn., Lan. Fus., which was published in the London Gazette dated 16th November, 1915, is hereby cancelled."

Provenance: Spink

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0713/9105/2053/files/img_02_de17388b-69b7-459e-93cf-3da356d7616f.jpg?v=1692850586
two-first-war-victory-medals-to-the-royal-artillery-gb4642
Two First War Victory Medals To The Royal Artillery
Two First War Victory Medals to the Royal Artillery - (37636 GNR. The young woman states that a wounded soldier who was in the drive of July 1st, reports that David Brent was first slightly wounded in the arm & afterwards was shot through the body & killed.

I answered the mother that no official report had been sent. Of course, the parents are very anxious to know the truth about their son & they have written to the young woman asking for the name of the wounded soldier. I thought it best to report the matter to you.
I have the honour to be, sir, your obedient Servant, Rev. T Newman.”

One year after Brent was killed, his family received notice about his belongings and the balance of $20.40 on his estate. On April 13, 1919, a cheque for $850.00 was sent to the family as the amount paid in continuance of this soldier’s allotment.

During the First War, the Newfoundland regiment was the only North American unit to fight in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. On July 1, 1916, the regiment was nearly wiped out at Beaumont Hamel, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Of the approximate 800 soldiers, a total of 324 men were killed, with 386 wounded and a mere 68 of the regiment surviving the battle. It was one of the deadliest days of the First War, as a total of 19,240 British and Commonwealth soldiers lost their lives, and over 38,000 were wounded. Approximately 8000 German soldiers suffered casualties.

The regiment was later rebuilt and continued to serve throughout France and Belgium. In December 1917, King George V bestowed the regiment with the right to use the prefix “Royal” before its name. It was the only military unit to receive this honour during the war. When the armistice was signed in 1918, 6,241 men had served in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Of those, 1,304 were killed.

Private David Brent is commemorated at the Beaumont-Hamel (Newfoundland) Memorial, Somme, France. Tribute is paid to the soldiers at Beaumont Hamel Memorial Park, by way of a large bronze caribou statue, the emblem of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, overlooking St John’s Road. The statue’s base has three bronze tablets which carry the names of the over 800 members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve, and the Mercantile Marine, who gave their lives in the First World War and have no known grave. Private Brent is among them.

united-kingdom-a-boer-war-and-first-world-war-chaplain-pair-to-reverend-geoffrey-maynard-evans-military-cross-and-kia-m0405-80
United Kingdom. After a distinguished academic career, he delayed theological training to enter service in the Boer War, where he served with the Leicestershire Militia and received the Queen’s South Africa Medal with two clasps. He later obtained a commission in the 1st Battalion, Welsh Regiment, and saw service in South Africa, Egypt, and England. Evans retired in 1911 and, returning to theological studies, entered Bishops’ College, Cheshunt, to prepare for ordination. He was ordained a Deacon in October 1913 by the Bishop of London, and was appointed a full priest of the Church of England in October 1914. Maynard received a commission with the Army Chaplains’ Department on 19 May 1915, and was attached to the Worcestershire Regiment. Deployed to France and Belgium with the British Expeditionary Force, Evans once again served with distinction, with commentary noting “He was an ideal Chaplain to the troops, and was simply worshipped by the men. He knew just how to deal with them, and there wasn’t a man in either battalion to which he ministered who could help being affected by his courage and energy, cheerfulness, and total absence of side.” Appropriately, Evans received the Military Cross (London Gazette for 5 June 1917) for “gallant and distinguished service in the field.” Tragically, his service was cut short when, on 11 August 1917 at the age of 35, he was killed by shell fire in a frontline trench while speaking with soldiers. Further to the accompanying medals and absent Military Cross, Evans was entitled to a full trio.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0713/9105/2053/files/MNC6707_91552f0c-54b3-4978-a656-8b2380e097fc.jpg?v=1749693798
united-kingdom-a-pair-of-army-chaplains-department-medals-for-first-world-war-service-m0405-82
United Kingdom.
