Further, although there is information indicating (see above) that he sailed to France and was present with the Regiment at Delville Wood and was wounded, and died at Givenchy as a result of his wounds on 16th July 1915, it seems more likely that whoever was collecting the information for the book on DSO recipients got thoroughly confused between father and 2 sons (Lieutenant Colonel?s Green's 2nd son, Edgar, did serve in the 2nd SAI (Pte. 3158, later commissioned to the Beds) and was wounded at Delville Wood in 1916.","brand":"eMedals","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46108608495893,"sku":"GB0195","price":6850.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0713\/9105\/2053\/files\/bag13802.jpg?v=1692837737"},{"product_id":"order-of-the-british-empire-cbe-gb0200","title":"Order Of The British Empire C.b.e.","description":"Commander's neck Cross (CBE) in silver gilt and enamels. A.D. MERRIMAN, R.N.); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star with France and Germany clasp; Italy Star; 1939-45 War Medal, court mounted on longpin. London Gazette 14 April 1941:\"His Majesty has also been graciously pleased to give orders for the following Appointments to the Distinguished Service Order, and to approve the following Awards formastery, determination and skill in action against the German Battleship Bismarck:Commander (E) Arthur Duncan Merriman (H.M.S. Suffolk)\"On 21\/22 May the C-In-C Home Fleet received word that The German Battleship Bismarck in company with Prinz Eugen had left the Baltic port of Gotenhafen withthe intention of preying on the merchant ships that carried supplies and war materials from Canada and the U.S.A. to Britain. The passage to the Atlantic is knownas the Denmark Straight. HMS Suffolk was immediately advised of the situation and ordered to locate the two German ships. Suddenly on the morning of 23 May,lookouts aboard HMS Sheffield noted the presence of Bismarck and Prinz Eugen making their way to the southwest along the ice at a fast rate of speed. HMS Suffolkimmediately changed course to hide in the Arctic mist and began forwarding a series of course and speed reports to Admiral Tovey. She was shortly joined by HMSNorfolk who also took up a shadowing position. Based on the reports coming from the shadowing ships, the Admiral dispatched the Battle Cruiser Force of HMSHood and HMS Prince of Wales with orders to engage the enemy. The Admiral sailed from Scapa Flow with the Battleships HMS King George V and HMS Repulse.HMS Victorious (carrier) and other cruisers and destroyers accompanied the Admiral?s force. On the morning of 24th May Bismarck was engaged by HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales in the North Atlantic. Much to the shock of the Royal Navy and the Britishpeople the Bismarck succeeded in sinking the \"Mighty Hood\" in a battle that lasted approximately six minutes. HMS Hood went down with almost all hands, therebeing only three survivors from a complement of 1419 men. During the battle the Bismarck had been hit by HMS Prince of Wales causing damage to her fuel tanksand disabling one of her engines. In the meantime, Churchill had given orders to \"Sink the Bismarck\". HMS Suffolk had lost contact with the German ships at 03:00 on the 25th and a massive searchwas begun. The Bismarck had disappeared! The Royal Navy ordered almost every capital ship into the area in order to prevent Bismarck from reaching port. She wasfinally sighted the following morning at 10:30 by RAF Coastal Command. Bismarck was approximately 700 miles northwest of Brest. With Admiral Tovey?s forcesstill some 150 miles to the north, something had to be done to slow the German Battleship. The ships of Force H, which had been diverted from Gibraltar on the 23rd, were now positioned to intercept the Bismarck before she was able to reach port. Thesethree ships were the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal, the cruiser HMS Renown and the light cruiser HMS Sheffield. HMS Ark Royal launched a Swordfish Torpedoraid against the Bismarck. Later that evening a second Swordfish raid was launched resulting in two torpedo hits on the Bismarck. One of the hits was minor, but theother had damaged the steering and jammed the rudder. With Bismarck slowed by the damage, four British and one Polish destroyers launched further torpedo attacks harassing the Bismarck continually during the night. The following morning (27th) HMS King George V and HMS Rodney arrived and engaged the Bismarck from approximately 16,000 yards range. After a one and a halfhour battle, Bismarck was reduced to a shambles. She was eventually scuttled by her crew.","brand":"eMedals","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46108641558805,"sku":"GB0383","price":9000.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0713\/9105\/2053\/files\/img_7517.jpg?v=1692837813"},{"product_id":"the-most-distinguished-order-of-st-michael-and-gb0408","title":"The Most Distinguished Order Of St. Michael And","description":"St. George, K.C.M.G. His term on this ship was short, as he almost immediately was drafted to the Battleship H.M.S. Albion, serving out of Devonport as part of the Channel Squadron. In 1915, the Albion was sent to the west coast of Africa and the Cape of South Africa. In 1916, Jerram was posted to Dreel Castle, a base in England and to Thalia, another base. His final ship was the Cruiser H.M.S. Crescent, a ship that had seen its better days and was now a depot ship at Scapa Flow. He also had five additional stints with Plymouth Division (1914 (2), 1916 (2) and 1919). Once recalled, he obtained the additional years required to fulfill fifteen years' service and qualify for the RNLSGC Medal. On his return to civilian life, Jerram must have been employed in the Civil Service, as he qualified for the Imperial Service Medal for twenty-five years' faithful service. During World War II, he evidently served the three years required to qualify for the Defence Medal in some civil defence organization. He was also awarded the War Medal 1939-45, probably in the Home Guard and in addition, the British Empire Medal, Civil, no doubt for gallantry during WWII. He was cited in the London Gazette for his BEM, Civil (January 1, 1945) and for his ISM (May 28, 1948). Upon retirement as a First Class Coaling Master, he was recognized for his loyal and meritorious service at H.M. Dockyard, Devonport, an honour that made he and his wife, Florena, proud. E. Lucas Phillips in The Spanish PimpernelDistinguished Service Order, G.V.R., silver-gilt and enamel; 1914-15 Star (17929 L. Cpl. E. C. Lance, W. York. London Gazette 26 September 1917:?For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was the only officer left of his battalion when the final objective was reached. Both flanks of his battalion were exposed and they were almost surrounded by the enemy. Thereupon he skilfully withdrew his men from a difficult position to a strong one 200 yards in the rear, checked the advance of the enemy, and held on under intense artillery fire until relieved two days later. The sound tactics, cool judgement and the daring example which he set his men undoubtedly secured a very important position.?Edwin Christopher Lance was born in Taunton, Somerset in June 1893, and was educated at Lancing College prior to enlisting in King Edward?s Horse in December 1912. Advanced to Corporal in January 1915, he deserted shortly afterwards, his father later stating in a letter to the authorities that he did not wish to disclose the reasons for his son?s sudden departure - instead he confirmed that Lance had enlisted in the West Yorkshire Regiment at York a few days later, which, after further investigation, proved entirely true.Active service in France and RussiaEmbarked for France with the 2nd Battalion in March 1915, the ex-deserter quickly made up for his past misdemeanours, being awarded a commission in the Field that September, when he joined the 6th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry, as a 2nd Lieutenant. And he remained actively engaged in that capacity until the end of hostilities, winning his D.S.O. for the the above cited deeds in the attack on Inverness Copse on 22 August 1917, during the battle of Ypres, a desperate engagement in which the 6th Battalion took heavy casualties - so heavy, in fact, that Lance, serving as a Temporary Captain and O.C. No. 3 Company, was the only officer left standing after the initial advance. The action is described in detail in the regimental history, including the text of the field messages sent by Lance to his C.O.:?9.30 a.m. Arrived eastern edge of Copse with few oddments, about 70 men in all. We were being surrounded so had been forced to withdraw. Both flanks in air. We must have reinforcements.?This was followed by a pigeon message:?9.55 a.m. Have arrived. Strength 2 platoons east of edge of Copse. Am being surrounded so we must fall back. No further supports have arrived.?The next message was timed 10.05 a.m.:?Pushed back from east edge of Copse. More reinforcements required. Lees (10th D.L.I.) unable to give me any more. Am still holding largest part of Copse.?A message which followed gave the dispositions of the Somerset men:?My line now runs from J.14.c.8.5 (northern edge of Copse) to Tank Trap (on the Menin road running through the Copse) to J.14.c.7.3 (a point on the road which runs north-west from the Chateau to the Menin road and about 300 yards from the ruined buildings). Still cannot find the Cornwalls (6th D.C.L.I., who attacked on the left of the 6th Somersets). Germans are congregating at strong point about J.14.c.9.4 (on the Menin road and about 150 yards east of the Somersets). Two platoons of Durham Light Infantry have come up on our left. We have 90 men in all.?At 11.15 a.m. another message from the O.C., No. 3 Company, was sent back:?We hold strong point at J.14.c.9.5 Several enemy machine-guns in front of us and Copse strongly held. We will hold on at all costs.?The precarious position of these brave fellows can be better appreciated by these last two messages, which give the co-ordinates of the opposing positions: they were but fifty yards apart. About 1 p.m., a hostile party of about one hundred Germans marched up the Menin road and turned south, just where the Chateau road joined up with the former. Several small parties of the enemy, each of about twenty men, were also seen moving up north and south. Next, a whole battalion of Germans was observed advancing over the ridge east of Inverness Copse. In response to our S.O.S. the guns opened fire and these hostile advances were checked. But again, about 2 p.m., the enemy was seen massing in the valley of the Bassvillebeek and some minutes later he was reported ?advancing towards us north of Menin road, 400 yards in front of our line.? Machine-gun, Lewis-gun and artillery fire again checked this advance and dispersed the enemy. At evening the line held by the 6th Somersets appears to have been from a point about 250 yards in and from the western edge of Inverness Copse, back along Jasper Avenue to the bend in the road running directly south from Clapham Junction and just south-east of Stirling Castle. During the night the 6th Somersets and one company of D.L.I., who had been holding the front line throughout the whole day, were relieved by the K.O.Y.L.I. and other companies of the Durhams, and moved back to the western edges of Inverness Copse in support. The Somerset men were greatly exhausted. In addition to the attack early in the morning of the 22nd, they had had to beat off three counter-attacks pressed with vigour. It is impossible to give the numbers of the Battalion at this period, but they must have been small, and it was but a remnant which held the western edges of the Copse.?But Lance?s trials were far from over:?Although the Battalion narrative does not mention it, the 6th Somersets were engaged with the enemy on the 24th. Throughout the night of the 23-24 the enemy concentrated the fire of his heavy batteries upon the Clapham Junction-Inverness Copse Sector. This bombardment intensified after midnight, and at dawn on the 24th the enemy launched his fourth counter-attack. This attack was delivered by a fresh German Division led by \"Sturm\" troops. The two leading waves were lightly equipped, the four succeeding waves carried full arms, tools and equipment. The forward posts, now held by companies of the K.O.Y.L.I., fell back upon the supports, which consisted of the survivors of the 6th Somersets (under Captain Lance) and 10th Durham L.I. (under Captain Jerrard). These two officers and their troops put up such a determined resistance that the hostile waves were broken in succession. \"Sturm Truppen\" infiltrated round the north of the Copse and actually crossed the Menin road, west of the Copse. Here fortunately they bumped into Battalion H.Q. 6th Somersets, now situated in Jasper Avenue 70 yards west of the wood, and were repulsed. Captain Manson, the Adjutant, fell at the junction of the Menin road and the Copse, though not till the enemy had been driven back, and his comrades in the wood made safe from being surrounded. London Gazette 26 June 1902.John MacNeil Walter was born in Meerut, India in June 1861, the son of General John MacNeil Walter, C.B., Colonel of the Royal Sussex Regiment. Educated at Cheltenham College and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he was commissioned in the 12th Foot in January 1880, and was advanced to Captain in April 1886, while stationed in India. Appointed D.A.A.G. to the 2nd Tochi Field Force, he was subsequently present in operations on the Punjab Frontier 1897-98 and won a \"mention\" (London Gazette 11 February 1898 refers).Having then been advanced to Major in April 1899, he witnessed further active service in South Africa, being present in the relief of Ladysmith operations, including Colenso. During the latter engagement the Devons entered the village after the Royal Artillery had got into trouble, and were forced to hold their positions until the order to withdraw was given. Colonel Bullock, commanding the 2nd Battalion, having not realised that orders to withdraw had been issued, decided to go the aid of a number of wounded Gunners trapped in the donga. With him were two officers, including Walter, and 33 other ranks. As soon as the enemy came into view Colonel Bullock and his men opened fire. Instead of answering fire with fire, the Boer Commander commandeered a British ambulance orderly and under the protection of the Red Cross walked up to Bullock?s position and told him the battle was over and that he should surrender. Bullock refused, demanding that his adversary should go back and fight it out, all this time British and Boer soldiers stood about watching and listening while their officers argued. The incident ended when one exasperated burgher, shouted, \"Surrender, you brave idiot!\" and clubbed Bullock on the head with his rifle. The defence of the donga earned the praise of General Buller: ?Colonel Bullock, 2nd Devons, behaved with great gallantry. He did not receive the orders to retire, and his party defended themselves and the wounded of the two batteries till nightfall, inflicting considerable loss on the enemy, and it was only when surrounded that he consented to surrender, because the enemy said they would shoot the wounded if he did not? (see Buller?s despatch of 17 December 1900).Walter was captured as a result of this action and interned in the Officer?s Prisoner of War Camp in the State Model School at Pretoria, being released upon the British occupation in June 1900. He subsequently served on the Staff, including time as Commandant at Irene and as Chief Censor at Cape Town. For his services in the Boer war he was awarded the D.S.O. and mentioned in despatches twice (London Gazettes 8 February 1901 and 10 September 1901 refer), the former distinction being presented to him by the King in December 1902.Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment from 1906 to 1910, Walter returned to India in the latter year as a substantive Colonel and A.A.G. at Headquarters, and was promoted to Tenporary Brigadier-General in September 1913. During the Great War he remained employed in India, serving as Adjutant-General 1915-17 and as a Major-General in Northern Command from early 1917, and was awarded the C.B. and C.S.I., in addition to another \"mention\" (London Gazette 18 May 1918 refers). H. Money, Bengal Civil Service, and Elizabeth, daughter of William Moffat, of Eden Hall, Roxburghshire. He was educated at a private school, and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and joined the 79th Highlanders on 8 February 1868. He was promoted Lieutenant in 1871, Captain in 1880, and Major in 1884, the year in which he joined the Regiment for service in the Gordon Relief Expedition. He was already noted for being 'one the smartest officers in the Battalion.' On 11 May 1885, Money was appointed Assistant Military Secretary to Lieutenant General Sir Frederick Stephenson, commanding in Lower Egypt, and in that capacity took part in the operations in the Sudan in 1883 and 1886, and held the appointment until 1887. He was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order for action at Giniss, and awarded the fourth class of the Order of the Osmanieh by His Highness the Khedive. On 21 May 1894, Money took over command of the regiment from Lieutenant Colonel A. Y. Leslie, who, owing to ill-health, had not been with the battalion since August 1893, and Money had been acting in temporary command during his absence. In 1895 Money became the first member of the Cameron?s to be appointed an A.D.C. to Queen Victoria and in 1897 he sailed, as Commanding Officer, with the 1st Battalion to Egypt. He arrived at Alexandria with the 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders on 4 October 1897; went up the Nile on 14 January 1898, and on 8 April 1898, \"the troops were formed for the assault, the Cameron Highlanders, under Colonel G. L. C. Money, D.S.O., A.D.C., being deployed into line in front of the British Brigade\". At the close of the action, Kitchener rode up to the Cameron?s to address them: \"Colonel Money, what your Battalion has done is one of the finest feats performed for many years. You ought to be proud of such a regiment.\" For its conduct during the battle the regiment received Royal permission for \"Atbara\" to be inscribed upon its colours and appointments. The Queen, in her congratulatory telegram to Sir H. Kitchener, said: \"Am proud of the gallantry of my soldiers; so glad my Cameron Highlanders should have been amongst them\".Money commanded the Cameron Highlanders in the battle of Omdurman, when his horse was shot under him, and was present at the Memorial Service for General Gordon at Khartoum. At the re-occupation of Khartoum, he was sent home with Kitchener's despatches, his services being recognized by the award of a Companionship of the Bath. In October 1898, Colonel Money was presented with an address of welcome in the Town Hall of Inverness. He commanded the 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders until 21 May 1899, when he left the regiment. He became an A.D.C. to King Edward VII in 1901, and received promotion to temporary Brigadier-General while commander of the troops in Ceylon. He was promoted to full Colonel on 6 June 1903. Money accompanied the coffin of Queen Victoria in her funeral procession in 1901, and marched in the King?s coronation procession in 1902. He retired on 14 September 1905, and later became a D.L. and a J.P. for Berwickshire. His favourite recreations were shooting and fishing. In 1917, he volunteered for submarine duty, with his first sub being the K-17, an experimental class, driven by steam turbines on the surface. This gave them a higher speed and the capability to operate with the Grand Fleet. He joined the K-17 on January 23, 1918. Eight days later, on January 31, while on manouevres with the fleet, the K-17 was rammed and sunk by the destroyer H.M.S. Fearless, in what has come to be known as The Battle of May Island. Although all fifty-six members of the K-17 managed to abandon ship safely, only eight men survived, Jackson being one of them. Athough posted to two other submarine depot ships (H.M.S. Bonaventure and Alecto), there is no record that Jackson served on any other submarine. He then volunteered to go back to General Service and was posted to the shore base H.M.S. Ganges and then to H.M.S. Gadfly, a small coastal destroyer in which he served out the war. In personal life, he married Beryl Montague Harston on April 7, 1926 in Kensington. Jackson took several courses in Torpedoes and Electrical and served on numerous light cruisers (H.M.S. Ceres, Enterprise, Colombo, Calypso, Capetown, Dragon), several of which he was Second in Command. He achieved the ranks of Lieutenant Commander \"T\" (July 15, 1925) and Commander (June 30, 1931) between the wars. At the beginning of World War II, Jackson was performing instructional duties in the torpedo school at H.M.S. Defiance. He then went on command the torpedo school at Eastbourne, with the rank of Captain (June 15, 1942). He was age retired on January 25, 1946 but was recalled to duty on February 4, 1947 and appointed to command the new entry base at H.M.S. Collingwood. He was invested with the Order of the British Empire, Commander, at Buckingham Palace, on July 12, 1949. After four years, he was deemed \"Medically Unfit\" and was retired for the final time. Jackson passed away in 1956 at the age of 60. Additional Footnote: The Battle of May Island is the name given to the series of accidents that occurred during Operation E.C.1 in 1918. Named after the Isle of May, an island in the Firth of Forth, close by, it was a disastrous series of accidents amongst Royal Navy ships on their way from Rosyth in Scotland to fleet exercises in the North Sea. On the misty night of January 31 to February 1, 1918, five collisions occurred, involving eight different vessels. Two submarines were lost and three other submarines and a light cruiser were damaged. 270 men died, all of them Royal Navy. Although it took place during the First World War, it was an entirely accidental tragedy and no enemy forces were present. It was therefore, not a 'Battle' and was only referred to as such with black humour. The subsequent investigation and court martial were kept quiet, with much of the information not released until the 1990s.
