Naming is officially impressed, crisp detail, beautiful patinas, original ribbons, extremely fine condition, board mounted. Also included is a duotang folder with his military biography. Footnote: R. W. Luff probably served during WWII in the Merchant Navy, in early 1944, on Atlantic convoys for at least a year. The fact that he earned the 1939-1945 Star and Atlantic Star but not the Defence Medal, would account for this. After the War, he joined the Royal Naval Reserve as he had likely taken a shore leave but wished to continue some form of service with the Navy. He was granted a commission in the Royal Naval Reserve and posted to a Sea Cadet Corps as an instructor. He was awarded the Cadet Forces Medal in 1956, for twelve years' service, with his War Service counting double to the earning of the medal. He obtained the rank of Lieutenant on January 10, 1957 and later, Lieutenant Commander on January 10, 1965. He is still shown with the same rank in 1966 in the Navy List but had not earned the MBE decoration as of yet. Therefore, he must have retired in late 1966 and upon his retirement, been awarded the MBE and later died, in 1971.
Mbe Group To Lt Cmdr W.j. Naming is officially impressed. Board mounted and extremely fine. Also included is a duotang folder with his military biography, two hand-drawn maps and six ship photographs. Footnote: Walter Jeffery Uden was born on July 8, 1868, son of John Uden of Guston, Kent and was privately educated. Pre-WWI, he achieved the ranks of Ordinary Seaman (circa 1886), Gunner, Torpedo (January 27, 1898) and Chief Gunner, Torpedo (January 27, 1913), while serving with a variety of ships: H.M.S. Camperdown (1898, Battleship), Scout (1899, Scout Class Cruiser), Forward (1905, Scout Class Cruiser), Actaeon (1908, Torpedo School Ship) and Bellerophon (1911, Battleship). During World War I, he served aboard the Battleship H.M.S. Canopus, from the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914 until early 1916, including the Battle of the Falklands on December 8, 1914 and was in the Dardanelles Campaign of 1915-1916. From June 1916, he spent the remainder of the war with the Torpedo School Ship H.M.S. Actaeon, as an instructor in charge of stores. He later became Ordinance Supply Officer at the Nore. Post-WWI saw two more rank changes: Commissioned Gunner (circa 1920) and Lieutenant (March 14, 1920), serving with H.M.S. Vernon (1919, Torpedo School), Actaeon (1921, Torpedo School) and Biter (tender to H.M.S. Actaeon). Uden was awarded the Order of the British Empire, 5th Class, Member, No. M. 2572 (Military): London Gazette, June 3, 1918. The MBE was presented by King George V at Buckingham Palace on December 17, 1918 and was awarded for stores work in Actaeon. He was married to Flora Mary Uden and was living in Widley, Hampshire, England when he passed away on March 3, 1947 at the age of 78. Naming is officially impressed on the three WWI medals. Board mounted group of seven (CBE unmounted), very crisp detail, beautiful patinas, extremely fine. Also included is a duotang folder with his military biography, copies of his service records, citation of his CBE in London Gazette of June 1949, K7 Memorial List (48 submariners who perished) and thirteen ship photographs. Footnote: Gerald Edward Armitage Jackson was born on April 28, 1896, son of Major Edward A. Jackson of the 3rd Suffolk Regiment. He began his naval career with the H.M.S. Monarch, as a Midshipman on September 15, 1913. He started the war on the Monarch, which was part of the 2nd Battleship Squadron. He later achieved the ranks of Acting Sub. Lieutenant (September 15, 1915), Sub Lieutenant (April 15, 1916) and Lieutenant (July 15, 1917). In 1917, he volunteered for submarine duty, with his first sub being the K-17, an experimental class, driven by steam turbines on the surface. This gave them a higher speed and the capability to operate with the Grand Fleet. He joined the K-17 on January 23, 1918. Eight days later, on January 31, while on manouevres with the fleet, the K-17 was rammed and sunk by the destroyer H.M.S. Fearless, in what has come to be known as The Battle of May Island. Although all fifty-six members of the K-17 managed to abandon ship safely, only eight men survived, Jackson being one of them. Athough posted to two other submarine depot ships (H.M.S. Bonaventure and Alecto), there is no record that Jackson served on any other submarine. He then volunteered to go back to General Service and was posted to the shore base H.M.S. Ganges and then to H.M.S. Gadfly, a small coastal destroyer in which he served out the war. In personal life, he married Beryl Montague Harston on April 7, 1926 in Kensington. Jackson took several courses in Torpedoes and Electrical and served on numerous light cruisers (H.M.S. Ceres, Enterprise, Colombo, Calypso, Capetown, Dragon), several of which he was Second in Command. He achieved the ranks of Lieutenant Commander "T" (July 15, 1925) and Commander (June 30, 1931) between the wars. At the beginning of World War II, Jackson was performing instructional duties in the torpedo school at H.M.S. Defiance. He then went on command the torpedo school at Eastbourne, with the rank of Captain (June 15, 1942). He was age retired on January 25, 1946 but was recalled to duty on February 4, 1947 and appointed to command the new entry base at H.M.S. Collingwood. He was invested with the Order of the British Empire, Commander, at Buckingham Palace, on July 12, 1949. After four years, he was deemed "Medically Unfit" and was retired for the final time. Jackson passed away in 1956 at the age of 60. Additional Footnote: The Battle of May Island is the name given to the series of accidents that occurred during Operation E.C.1 in 1918. Named after the Isle of May, an island in the Firth of Forth, close by, it was a disastrous series of accidents amongst Royal Navy ships on their way from Rosyth in Scotland to fleet exercises in the North Sea. On the misty night of January 31 to February 1, 1918, five collisions occurred, involving eight different vessels. Two submarines were lost and three other submarines and a light cruiser were damaged. 270 men died, all of them Royal Navy. Although it took place during the First World War, it was an entirely accidental tragedy and no enemy forces were present. It was therefore, not a 'Battle' and was only referred to as such with black humour. The subsequent investigation and court martial were kept quiet, with much of the information not released until the 1990s. In regards to the original owner of the group, Sir Henry Fowler, KBE (July 29, 1870 - October 16, 1938), he was an English railway engineer, and was chief mechanical engineer of the Midland Railway and subsequently the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. Fowler was born in Evesham, Worcestershire, on July 29, 1870. His father, also named Henry, was a furniture dealer, and his family were Quakers. He was educated at Prince Henry's Grammar School, Evesham (now Prince Henry's High School, Evesham), and at Mason Science College (which became the University of Birmingham) between 1885 and 1887 where he studied metallurgy. He served an apprenticeship under John Aspinall at the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (L&YR)'s Horwich Works from 1887 to 1891. Fowler was elected as a Whitworth Exhibitioner in 1891. He then spent four years in the Testing Department under George Hughes, whom he succeeded as head of the department.

Between 1895 and 1900, he was a gas engineer of the L&YR, moving on June 18, 1900 to the Midland Railway (MR). On November 1, 1905 he became assistant works manager, being promoted to works manager two years later. In 1908, following a visit to Sheffield, he was accredited with the formation of the Midland Railway Engineering Club which is now called the Derby Railway Engineering Society. In 1909, he succeeded Richard Deeley as chief mechanical engineer (CME) of the MR. Between 1915 and 1919, Fowler was employed on war work and James Anderson became acting CME. During the First World War he was seconded to the Ministry of Munitions, being director of production from 1915 to 1917 and then assistant director general of aircraft production. In 1919, Fowler was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) for his contributions to the war effort.

On the Grouping of 1923, he was appointed deputy CME of the newly formed London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), under George Hughes and became CME in October 1925. He was also invited to serve on the Government Bridge Stress Committee investigating stresses in railway-bridges, especially as regards the effects of moving loads. Along with Anderson, Fowler was responsible for the adoption by the LMS of the Midland's small engine policy. Various Midland standard types were built by the LMS, including the 4P Midland Compound 4-4-0, the 2P 4-4-0, the 4F 0-6-0, and the 3F 0-6-0T. The small engine policy resulted in frequent double-heading, as the locomotives were not powerful enough to cope with loads, and thus increased expense. Standardisation also left these standard locomotives with short-travel valves and small axle boxes, the former leading to inefficiency and the latter to frequent hot axle boxes.

In 1928, the LMS introduced the Royal Scot 4-6-0 express passenger locomotive, based on the SR Lord Nelson Class. In another departure from the small engine policy, several 2-6-0+0-6-2 Beyer-Garratts were acquired for the Toton-Brent coal trains. However, interference from Derby meant that the locomotives received standard small axle-boxes and short-travel valves, with the result that they were poor performers. Fowler was not a hands-on engineer in the mould of George Jackson Churchward. Although (as was traditional) designs produced during his tenure were credited to him as "Fowler" locomotives, the majority of the work was done by his staff, with minimal personal involvement from Fowler. An analogy may be made with his successor Sir William Stanier's Princess Coronation (Duchess) class, which was largely designed by LMS draughtsmen while Stanier was out of the country, although Stanier was more deeply involved in other designs during his tenure.

In 1930, Fowler became President of the Whitworth Society as successor to Mr. F. H. Livens, J.P. Fowler retired in 1933, Ernest Lemon initially taking over as CME for a short period before William Stanier was head-hunted into the job from the Great Western Railway. Stanier was to reform LMS locomotive policy. Fowler died on October 14, 1938 at his home, Spondon Hall (now demolished), Derby, at the age of 68. He was buried in the Nottingham Road Cemetery, Chaddesden, Derby.

2.
