Footnote: William III & II (November 4, 1650 – March 8, 1702) was a sovereign Prince of Orange of the House of Orange-Nassau by birth. From 1672 he governed as Stadtholder William III of Orange over Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, and Overijssel of the Dutch Republic. From 1689 he reigned as William III over England and Ireland. By coincidence, his regnal number (III) was the same for both Orange and England. As King of Scotland, he is known as William II. He is informally known by sections of the population in Northern Ireland and Scotland as "King Billy". In what became known as the "Glorious Revolution", on November 5, 1688 William invaded England in an action that ultimately deposed King James II & VII and won him the crowns of England, Scotland and Ireland. In the British Isles, William ruled jointly with his wife, Mary II, until her death on December 28, 1694. The period of their joint reign is often referred to as "William and Mary". A Protestant, William participated in several wars against the powerful Catholic king of France, Louis XIV (The Sun King), in coalition with Protestant and Catholic powers in Europe. Many Protestants heralded him as a champion of their faith. Largely because of that reputation, William was able to take the British crowns when many were fearful of a revival of Catholicism under James. William's victory over James at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 is still commemorated by the Orange Order. His reign marked the beginning of the transition from the personal rule of the Stuarts to the more Parliament-centred rule of the House of Hanover.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0713/9105/2053/files/img_03_ba68b89b-847d-4d71-ae2a-5360c86d22e7.jpg?v=1692839242
army-temperance-association-india-medal-gb3179
Army Temperance Association India Medal
Army Temperance Association India Medal - ATAI.5. The blade measures 9.9 mm thick at its widest point near the haft (shaft) and 3 mm thick where it terminates into the bit, with a voided area on the blade itself in the shape of heart. It is stamped on the top of the blade "AND" with an area in front of the lettering scratched out (likely the latter half of the manufacturing stamp "ENGLAND"). The opposite end displays the bowl with a fashioned wide neck, the junction between the bowl and the blade featuring raised chevrons with four horizontal rules on either side butting the bowl and a raised molding on either side butting the blade. The eye is diamond-shaped, holding the haft firmly in place and is missing its clean-out plug. The haft is fabricated from treated Osage Orange tree wood (AKA Maclura Pomifera), incorporating nine brass bands which were likely placed upon the haft by the recipient and not issued this way. The mouthpiece is also brass and is missing its stem. It measures 145 mm x 295 mm x 25 mm thick, exhibiting crazing and pitting in the brass bands, along with contact marks overall from active use, fine. Provenance: This fine peace pipe tomahawk was acquired from a prominent Canadian collection, the name of which will be disclosed to the buyer.

Footnote: Pipe tomahawks came into being during the early years of the fur trade. They were designed and made in Europe, combining the emblems of peace (pipe) and war (tomahawk). Many of these were presented as presents to Native leaders of tribes to encourage their loyalty, some with elaborate and expensive inlays and craftsmanship, and were carried as badges of social standing. They were multi-purpose tools in the sense they could be used in war and for smoking rather than carrying both items separately. But they were also very symbolic in that they could be used both for war and for peace. Many were made in Sheffield, England and in North America. Although any wood could be used, they often used Osage Orange for it's resistance to decay, or Ash because the saplings pithy core could be easily bored with a red hot poker or sometimes curly Maple with inlays, if a Kentucky Rifle maker was fashioning it. Some were made not to be used as weapons but as a smoking item reminiscent of days gone by.

An 1876 Highland Society of Scotland Medal - Silver, obverse illustrating a seated female upon a dais, a shield with the Scottish coat-of-arms at her feet, using both hands to place laurel wreaths upon the heads of agricultural workers on her left and right, maker marked "18 KIRKWOOD & SON 61" on the dais base, inscribed in Latin "SEMPER ARMIS" (Always Arms) and "NUNC ET INDUSTRIA" (Now and Industry) below, reverse engraved "TO Rob Brownlie CARLUKE For Ayrshire Bull CALDER WATER HEAD, 1876" inside an open-ended wreath of thistles and laurel leaves, surrounded by the inscription "HIGHLAND AND AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY OF SCOTLAND" and inscribed "INST. The son of a wealthy textile manufacturer, he served in many top offices over four decades. While serving as Home Secretary, Peel reformed and liberalized the criminal law, and created the modern police force, leading to a new type officer known in tribute to him as "bobbies" (in England) and "peelers" (in Ireland). He cut tariffs to stimulate business and to replace the lost revenue, he pushed through a 3% income tax. He played a central role in making Free Trade a reality and set up a modern banking system. Initially a supporter of legal discrimination against Catholics, Peel eventually supported the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1829, claiming "though emancipation was a great danger, civil strife was a greater danger". Peel has been criticized for his handling of the Irish famine. In 1834, Peel issued the Tamworth Manifesto, laying down the principles upon which the modern British Conservative Party is based. Peel often started from a traditional Tory position in opposition to a measure, then reversed himself and became the leader in supporting liberal legislation. This was the case with the Test Act (1828), Catholic Emancipation (1829), the Reform Act of 1832, the Income Tax (1842) and the Corn Laws (1846).

A Rare 1854 Philips' New Map of the Crimea - Map entitled "PHILIPS' NEW MAP OF THE CRIMEA, WITH MAP OF EUROPE AND VIEW OF SEBASTOPOL", printed in black and olive green inks, featuring a map of the Crimea with the Taurid region to the north and the Kertch Peninsula to the east, surrounded by various bodies of water, including the Black Sea and the Sea of Azof, with various Bays, Seas, Straits and Gulfs identified, along with mountains, rivers, towns and other areas of interest, the scale in miles, bottom right corner with an inset map of Europe illustrating the Crimea in relation to the rest of Europe, bottom left corner with a line drawing of a sweeping panorama featuring Fort Constantine, Fort St. Nicholas and Fort Alexander, map measuring 520 mm x 675 mm, with fold lines.
