Brown was born in 1881 and named his next-of-kin as his mother, Elizabeth Brown. He also had a brother, Frank and a sister, Dorothy. He signed his Attestation Paper on August 20, 1897 at the Depot Battery, Field Artillery, Woolrich, Kent, England, with the Royal Artillery for twelve years' service, at the age of 16, stating the he was not married and his trade as that of Boy in the Royal Arsenal. He spent eleven days in hospital, from March 7 to 18, 1898 at Woolrich with a case of Ringworm. The following year, he was designated as a Driver with the Royal Artillery on May 20, 1899 and granted his 1st Good Conduct Badge on August 20th. Brown was transferred to the Army Ordnance Corps on January 29, 1900 and soon saw service in the South African theatre during the Boer War. He was hospitalized for various ailments aboard the S.S. Armenian on the trip to South Africa, as well as at Cape Town and Pretoria, but nothing of a serious nature. For his 4 year and 250 day service in South Africa (August 9, 1900 to April 15, 1905), he earned the Queen's South Africa Medal with three clasps (Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal) and the King's South Africa Medal with two clasps (1901, 1902), as evidenced by his Medal Rolls. Upon his return to England, he was granted his 2nd Good Conduct Badge on April 1, 1903 and his 3rd Good Conduct Badge on May 20, 1909. He re-engaged for additional service with the Army Ordnance Corps on July 9, 1909. Brown officially signed on for World War I service on November 5, 1914 and is documented as having been in Cairo, Egypt in 1915. It was here that he was granted 4th Good Conduct Badge on August 20, 1915. Near the end of the war, he was appointed Lance Corporal on November 1, 1918. He spent time at the Royal Hospital at Chelsea in June 1919 before being discharged from active service on July 13, 1919 at Woolwich. Dark patinas, original ribbons, edge nicks, bruised, period suspension repair on KSA, fine. Accompanied by copies of his Short Service Attestation Paper, Service Records and QSA\/KSA Rolls of Eligibility. Footnote: Herbert H. (Edward) Wright signed his Short Service Attestation Paper under the alias John Jones, on April 5, 1898 in Lancaster, England. He stated that he was born in Darlington, Durham, England, that he was eighteen years of age, that he was currently with 3rd Battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment and that his trade was that of Labourer. Upon signing with the Rifle Brigade, it is likely that he used the alias John Jones to circumvent the fact that he was not of age when he enlisted. His deceit went further, even listing his next of kin as his brother, Richard Jones. The form was later altered in the named area at the top to the correct identification. During his time in South Africa, he fought with the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade and is documented in the Rolls of Eligibility as \"Herbert H. Wright\", receiving the mentioned appropriate clasps for the QSA and KSA. He was given permission to change his name to Herbert Edward Wright on May 30, 1899. Wright was posted as a Private on August 24, 1898, and later, Acting Corporal on March 19, 1902. Four months later, his rank reverted to Private due to \"misconduct\". March 1902 saw him change his theatre of operation to India, lasting until December 1905, with the beginning of November 1902 having him transferring to the Corps of Lancers of the Line and posted to the 9th Lancers, Bengal in India. He extended his service in March 1904 and received two Good Conduct Badges on April 1. He re-engaged for an additional four years in 1910 at Canterbury, serving on the home front in the Lancaster Reserve and is confirmed in the list under Cavalry Records. His ranks included that of Private, Acting Corporal and finally, Lance Corporal in late 1914, upon his departure from the Reserves. He was credited with six years in the Army and an additional eight years in the Reserves. He married the Spinster Roseanne Louise at Bolton in 1908 and had three children: Lilian (1909), Gerald (1912) and Brie (1918).","brand":"eMedals","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46109912498453,"sku":"GB4090","price":390.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0713\/9105\/2053\/files\/a_south_african__53f74091a30c6.jpg?v=1692842151"},{"product_id":"the-awards-of-captain-thomas-r-brady-royal-dublin-fusiliers-gb1487","title":"The Awards Of Captain Thomas R. Accompanied by copies of paperwork authorizing his awarding of the QSA, KSA, 1914-15 Star, BWM and VM and 110 photographs of records from a hardbound book in the National Archives housing extensive records, including his Attestation Papers, Service Records, Medical Records, Innoculation Certificates, along with recommendation letters and various signed correspondence between Brady and assorted officials, among other papers, on CD. Footnote: Thomas Richard Brady was born July 7, 1878 to Anne and Patrick Brady of Dublin. He signed his Attestation Paper on June 17, 1897 at Curragh Camp in Dublin, Ireland, stating that he was 18 years and 11 months of age, that he had previous military service in the 4th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, that he was not married and that his trade as that of Clerk. He served at home from July 17, 1897 until December 23, 1898, after which he was sent to South Africa, where the 2nd Dublins were based in Natal Colony and where they would still be when the Boer War began in 1899. Brady was promoted to Corporal on October 22, 1899 and is credited with having been there from December 24, 1898 until February 11, 1902, earning him the six clasp QSA and the two clasp KSA. After the war was over, he was transferred to the East Indies, from February 12, 1902 until November 8, 1903 and promoted to Sergeant on October 16, 1902, returning home thereafter, for two years. He is listed as having been in China from November 4, 1905 and posted as Sergeant, Chinese Regiment, until his departure on October 1, 1906. A request was received from the Commandant of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, asking for a recommendation from the Commanding Officer, 2nd Dublin Fusiliers, in regards to the possible placement of Sergeant Brady in a possible vacancy in the stall of instructors in the Corps. The Commandant delivered a positive reply, stating that Brady was \"an excellent accountant \u0026amp; clerk\" and gave him a full recommendation. While serving at home for the next four years, in addition to his re-engaging for additional service on July 6, 1908 at Naas, Ireland and his promotion to Colour Sergeant on February 19, 1909, he married at the age of 28, Abigail Bertha Matthews, herself age 21, at Farham, on March 30, 1909. Brady is listed in his service records as having served in India from November 8, 1910 until December 23, 1914, although it is known that the 2nd Battalion itself left for Aldershot, England in 1910, where it received its new Colours from the Regiment's Colonel-in-Chief the following year. The 2nd Battalion remained in England until the Great War began in 1914. What is confirmed is that he was Appointed Colour Sergeant Major on November 16, 1914 and stationed in England from December 24, 1914 until February 10, 1915. The 2nd Battalion RDF was now being prepared for action in the French and Belgian theatres, with Brady being promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on February 11, 1915. He arrived with the 2nd Battalion RDF in France on March 23, 1915, ready for action. The Battalion took part in all but one of the subsidiary battles during the Second Battle of Ypres that took place between April 22 and May 24, 1915. The Battalion suffered heavily at the Battle of St. Julien, the second subsidiary battle, incurring hundreds of casualties. Brady was involved in a gas attack here by the Germans, at the age of 37, on May 2, as documented in a Medical Report, \"whilst in trenches in front of St. Julien, during an attack, gas was sent over from German trenches. The gas got into his throat and lungs making him gasp and cough but he went on with his work. He could not walk more than a few yards without feeling exhausted.\" The next day, he was sent to hospital, where he remained until May 7, after which he embarked for England from Boulogne, France for Dover aboard the ship, St. Patrick. He spent three weeks hospitalized but did recover from the effects of the gas poisoning, returning to duty in early June, again with the 2nd Battalion in the French theatre. One year later, the British launched the Somme offensive on July 1, 1916, with the 1st and 2nd Royal Dublin Fusiliers taking part in the First Day of the Battle of the Somme that saw the British forces sustain horrific casualties, some 60,000, about 20,000 of which were killed. Brady was wounded on that very first day, suffering shell (shrapnel) wounds of his jaw and both legs. He was placed aboard the ship Oxfordshire, embarking Le Havre, France for Southampton, England on July 3, for treatment at St. Thomas Hospital in London. He was later transferred to his home country of Ireland, for additional treatment and convalescence at Central Military Hospital, Cork. The jaw mended well but a fever and the injured left knee continued to hobble him, imparing his general health. After several months and many medical reviews, he was deemed unfit for General Service but deemed fit for Home Service by a Medical Board. He was granted leave from the 2nd Battalion, RDF on November 16, 1916 as the result of his wounds suffered at the Somme and was placed with the 3rd Reserve Battalion, RDF at Cork. He remained at home for the duration of the war, seeing a promotion to Captain on June 6, 1918. Un-mounted, contact marks, edge nicks, very fine. Accompanied by copies of his Service Records and Medal Rolls from the National Archives. \n\nFootnote: Thomas David Ash was born on May 17, 1868 in Seursham, Kent, England. He began service as a Boy Seaman (124245) with the Royal Navy in September 1883, becoming an Ordinary Seaman in May 1886, followed by his appointment to Yeoman of Signals in late June 1886, then being named Chief Yeoman of Signals in May 1903. He was to serve aboard a number of ships and at various bases throughout his naval career, including: H.M.S. Boscawen, Neptune, Duke of Wellington, Bacchante, Osprey, Hercules, Northumberland, Active, Victory I, Crescent, Vivid I, Grafton, Philomel, Lion, Magnificent, Blake, Niobe, Aeolus, Temeraire, Triumph, Tenedos, Cornwallis and Egmond. While serving with the Pearl-class cruiser H.M.S. Philomel, the ship was at the West Africa Station and participated in the Benin Expedition, earning Ash the East and West Africa Medal with Benin 1897 clasp. He was awarded the E\u0026amp;WA medal on May 16, 1898 while stationed at H.M.S. Vivid. While serving with the Diadem class of protected cruiser H.M.S. Niobe, Ash was in action during the Boer War, escorting troops to Cape Town, with the Queen's South Africa Medal subsequently awarded to the crew. Ash received the QSA medal on January 25, 1902 while stationed at H.M.S. Vivid. Upon the conclusion of his Royal Navy career, Ash joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on June 15, 1906. He was recalled for service during the First World War, serving with H.M.S. Albion and President II. He is documented as having been \"wounded in action\" while with the Canopus-class predreadnought battleship H.M.S. Albion. The ship had been transferred from Atlantic service to the Cape of Good Hope Station in South Africa in October 1914, where she took up duty as a guard ship at Walvis Bay through November 1914. In December 1914 and January 1915, she participated in Allied operations against German Southwest Africa. Albion was transferred to the Mediterranean in January 1915, to participate in the Dardanelles campaign. She took part in the bombardment of the Ottoman Turkish forts guarding the outer entrance to the Dardanelles on February 18-19, 1915. Albion, Majestic, and Triumph became the first Allied battleships to enter the Turkish Straits during the Dardanelles campaign on February 26, 1915, when they made the initial attack on the inner forts. Albion then supported the first Allied landings in late February 1915 and early March 1915. In action against Ottoman forts on March 1, 1915, Albion took repeated hits but sustained no serious damage. She participated in the main attack on the forts on March 18, 1915, and supported the main landings at V Beach at Cape Helles on April 25th. She suffered significant damage from Ottoman shore batteries during an attack on Krithia on April 28th, forcing her to retire to Mudros for repairs. She returned to action on May 2nd, again suffered damage necessitating repairs at Mudros. On the night of May 22-23, 1915, Albion beached on a sandbank off Gaba Tepe and came under heavy fire from Ottoman shore batteries. About 200 fragmentation shells hit her, but they could not penetrate her armor and did no serious damage, Albion suffering fewer than a dozen casualties. After efforts were made to free her by reducing her weight and by using the recoil of firing her main guns simultaneously, her sister ship Canopus towed her to safety on May 24th, Albion still firing at the Ottoman forts while being towed clear. Albion left the area for repairs on May 26th and underwent a refit at Malta in May-June 1915. Chief Yeoman of Signals Thomas David Ash, O.N. (Royal Fleet Reserve, Devonport A\/1784) was Mentioned in Despatches by the Vice-Admiral Commanding the Eastern Mediterranean Squadron for good service in action, the announcement appearing in the Third Supplement to the London Gazette 29581 of Friday, May 12, 1916, on Monday, May 15, 1916, page 4831. He is listed in his records as having been Mentioned in Despatches twice. Ash is on record as having been on loan to the Royal Air Force in 1917, until January 1919. For his First World War service, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
