A rare and well-preserved Luftschutz M42 steel helmet, constructed of a single sheet of magnetic molybdenum steel which retains the majority of its period dark grey-blue paint. The shell is flanked by two integral ventilation holes, while three additional rivets are distributed around the outer circumference to secure the internal fixtures in place. The peak retains a period Luftschutz decal, consisting of a pair of stylized wings joined together at the centre by a mobile swastika, in turn topped by an banner bearing an inscription of “LUFTSCHUTZ” (“AIR PROTECTION”), which remains largely intact with the notable exception of the missing tip of the left wing (viewed from the front). A raised bead fully surrounds the lower edge of the crown where the helmet flares into a skirt. The rim remains uncrimped in classic M42 style. The interior retains an original canvas liner which consists of eight fingers, each perforated at the top with an eyelet through which is looped a period original drawstring, padded against the shell by three sections of layered cork. Stamped onto the back of the skirt is a partially-legible maker’s mark. Visible on the liner is a handwritten owner’s name, possibly reading “RATH”. The helmet measures approximately 25.5 cm (w) x 28 cm (w) x 13 cm (h). It demonstrates minor, age-appropriate issues in addition to the compromised decal, including poor application of paint likely owing to late-war quality control issues, with sporadic scratching and surface oxidation visible throughout the shell, in additional to fatigue and soiling of the interior liner and the loss of the helmet’s chinstrap. The helmet features a padded black leather comb extending across the crown, with an additional tube of identical construction surrounding the rim. It is flanked on each side by a ventilation hole reinforced with non-magnetic metal mesh. Riveted to the peak is a second pattern NSKK-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, constructed of blackened and silvered bronze and measuring 16.5 mm (w) x 9 cm (h) as presented. The exterior features are completed with a narrow, sloping visor similarly constructed of blackened leather. Descending from the interior rim is a blackened leather neck guard featuring hidden earpieces for functionality during wear. When not in use, the flap neatly rolls up and secures in place. Also descending from the rim are blackened leather ear guards complete with flaps which fasten in place with bronze studs. The interior is encompassed by a brown leather liner which culminates in nine fingers, each perforated at the top with eyelets through which is looped and original drawstring. Emanating from the crown is a padded brown leather guard. Stamped onto the reverse of the left ear guard is a partially-legible NSKK unit mark which appears to be attributed to Motorgruppe Leipzig. Also stamped onto the liner is a size mark of “58”. The helmet measures approximately 21 cm (w) x 26 cm (l) x 16 cm (h) (inclusive of visor and comb). An extremely well-preserved Deutscher Luftsportverband (German Air Sports Association\/DLV) Flyer’s Knife, measuring 34 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 17 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the edges and tip. Acid-etched onto the reverse ricasso is a maker’s mark of “F. \u0026amp; A. HELBIG STEINBACH KR. M.”, circumscribing the firm’s “GAEGLER” trade name which is executed in cursive script. The blade sits securely within a nickel-silver crossguard which takes the form of a pair of stylized wings, in turn bearing double-sided central black mobile swastika, with an intact dark blue Moroccan leather buffer pad covering the seam. The handle consists of a wooden core with a gentle curvature, fully lined with a dark blue Moroccan leather grip. It completes with a rounded nickel-silver pommel which screws into the tang to maintain the knife’s structural integrity. Accompanying the knife is its original scabbard, constructed of a magnetic metal shaft lined on the exterior with dark blue Moroccan leather. Nickel-silver fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat with side rivets. Emanating from the latter is a loop for the accommodation of a hanger, itself constructed of a brown leather strap connecting to a functional nickel-silver spring clip for uniform attachment. Stamped onto the throat is a DLV insignia, while a functional catch situated within the interior firmly holds the knife in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include faint running marks to the blade, a consistent patina throughout the nickel-silver fixtures, and minor material fatigue to the leather elements.
