Footnote: Karl Heinz Konrad Ernst Ranst was born on the 25th of June, 1924 in Gennebreck, near Arnsberg. He was a born citizen of the German Reich, and put his religion down as believer, choosing not to identify with a mainstream religion of the time. He was unmarried at the time of issue in 1941, and was trained to work as a white collar clerk. His father was Karl, who worked as a construction foreman, and his mother was Agnes, nee Bischoff. He continued school after primary, and attended a business school.\nHe volunteered for service on December 23rd, 1941 and had his medical examination in the neighboring town of Wuppertal. He was deemed combat ready and placed with the first reserves. On the 12th of January 1942, he was taken on by the Waffen SS as a volunteer. He was posted to the Nürnberg 8th SS N.E.A on January 30th 1942, and officially sworn in on the 12th of May of the same year. In the same year he was transferred to a special training staff, and in 1943 took part in the signal school of the Waffen SS. He spent the remainder of the war in signals divisions. The last entry is from February 10, 1945, and remains blank.\nHe was trained with the standard 98K rifle and was specially trained as a radio operator. A stamp indicates that from September 4th 1944 to January 25th 1945 he successfully trained at the SS Signal School. He was also instructed in counter espionage.\nAugust 1st 1942 he was made an SS Oberführer, roughly equivalent to the rank of brigadier. March 1st 1943 he was made an SS Sturmmann, a storm trooper. January 1st 1945 he was made a candidate to the rank of Unterführer. There is an entry indicating a promotion to the rank of Section Leader on April 20th 1944, but it is crossed out. He received no awards or commendations, which seems in keeping with his steady trend of demotions.\nOn December 17th, 1943 he was deployed to Russia. He entered the Bavarian Cavalry in 1901 and with them came into the World War I, from 1915 until 1918 he served with the General Staff of the 3rd Bavarian Army Corps. After the war he remained in the newly created Reichswehr where he worked at a number of General Staff positions and later served as an instructor. In October 1937, he became the commander of the 13th Army Corps, that later served in the 1938 German occupation of Sudetenland, for the German invasion of Poland he was appointed head of his own Army Corps \"Weichs\". After the Polish surrender, and in preparation for the invasion of France, he was made Commander in Chief of the 2nd Army, a part of Rundstedt?s Army Group A in the West. For his successes in the French campaign he was awarded the Knight's Cross and promoted into a Colonel General. Leading his corps, Weichs later took part in the Balkans Campaign, and in preparation for Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, he was assigned to lead the 2nd Army as a part of Fedor von Bock?s Army Group Centre which he led in 1941 through the Battle of Kiev and the Battle of Smolensk and then on to Vyazma and Bryansk. In 1942, for Fall Blau, Weichs was assigned to lead the newly created Army Group B, composed of the 2nd Army, Hermann Hoth?s 4th Panzer Army, the 2nd Hungarian and the 8th Italian armies and also the 6th Army under Friedrich Paulus, assigned to take the city of Stalingrad and cover approximately 800 kilometers of front. Weichs warned about his lines being stretched too thinly, but Hitler ignored this, and Weich?s fears materialized when the successful Soviet Operation Uranus, smashed the Italian, Hungarian and Romanian armies on flanks, cutting off the 6th Army inside Stalingrad. Suggesting retreats, Weichs fell out of Hitler?s favor. Consequently, parts of Army Group B were taken away from Weichs command and incorporated into a new Army Group Don, led by Erich von Manstein, later in February the remaining part merged with the Don Group into a newly reinstated Army Group South, also led by Manstein. Weichs was put in leader reserve. As the German situation was starting to become more dire, in August of 1943 Weichs was appointed the commander of the Army Group F in the Balkans defending from possible Allied invasion in what was seen as Germany?s weak underbelly and fighting off local partisan groups that were gaining strength. In late 1944, he oversaw the German retreat from Greece and most of Yugoslavia. As the Nazi Germany fell apart, Weichs was finally retired on March 25, 1945 and was arrested by American troops in May. During the Nuremberg Trials, Weichs was found implicated in the war crimes committed while suppressing the partisans, however, he was removed from the Hostages Trial due to medical reasons without having been judged or sentenced. He died at Burg R?sberg near Bonn. June 1st 1938 he was named Comrade Unit Leader of his local 136 Iserlohn youth group. On the 9th of November 1938 he was made Troop Leader of the same group. In November of 1940 he was promoted to Junior Corporal (Oberrottenfuerher,) a title issued exclusively to members of the Hitler Youth. He then acted as a Cadre Unit Leader.  20th of July 1940 he was issued his work book (arbeitsbuch.) he was categorized to work group 23. His first work experience began in August 1940 at a metal ware factory in his hometown called J.H Schmidt \u0026amp; Sons, where he started as an apprentice. His arbeitsbuch was temporarily suspended for an unstated reason.  He survived the war with no account of having served active military service.
