He entered military service in 1941 with Flieger-Ausbildungs-Bataillon 63 (Eger), and later attended a variety of training schools and courses, including Flugzeugführerschule A\/B 121, before being assigned to Jagdgeschwader 107 (Essey-lès-Nancy, France) on 7 May 1943. He received the Pilot’s Badge on 14 May 1943 (with an entry in the Wehrpaß confirming the award document), after being promoted to Unteroffizier on 1 May 1943.
