It is dated to February 12, 1945 and signed in blue ink by SS-Oberführer Oskar Dirlewanger. Sent to the SS-Führungshauptamt (Leader Headquarters) in Berlin, department IIb\n(rehabilitation of NCOs and crews). The letter states that several infantrymen ((B)-Schützen) are to be rehabilitated starting January 30, 1945. The names came with an additional list. The men’s personnel records are to be updated. Since the soldiers in Dirlewanger’s unit\nwere criminals who could seek rehabilitation in fighting for the German Reich, this is a letter about several men who had redeemed themselves in this way.\n\nFootnote: Oskar Dirlewanger (1895–1945) has been described by several historians as one of the most brutal and sadistic Nazi soldiers, one going so far to call him “the most evil man in the SS”. He fought in the First War, was wounded six times, and earned the Iron Cross 2nd and 1st Class. During the Second War, he led the 36th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, also known as SS-Sturmbrigade Dirlewanger, which was made up of convicted criminals given a second chance. They were put to fighting against partisans, but also to kill civilians in occupied\nBelarus and in the Warsaw Uprising. The unit is infamous for possibly being the one unit that committed the most, and most atrocious, war crimes. For his actions in Belarus, Dirlewanger received the German Cross in Gold, and after the Warsaw Uprising, he was promoted to\nSS-Oberführer in August 1944, and received the Iron Cross of the Knight’s Cross in October. He went on to lead his unit in the suppression of the Slovak National Uprising. At the age of nine, he was sent to Germany to further his education, and later attended King’s College School in England. Returning to Germany before the start of World War I, he volunteered for military service and was wounded in action a number of times. After the war, he pursued graduate studies in agronomy, with a focus on animal husbandry, and completed a PhD in 1929. Darré became involved with various nationalist and Völkisch movements in the Weimar Republic, authoring articles and studies on farming and agriculture through a racial lens. His writings on the application of Nordic theories to agriculture brought him to the attention of Heinrich Himmler, and in 1930 Darré joined both the NSDAP and SS. As a newly-appointed administrator of the SS Race and Settlement Main Office, Darré’s rhetoric became overtly anti-Semitic as he assisted in formulating plans for the expansion of farming in a German-dominated Europe. He also founded the Reichsnährstand to regulate food production in the Third Reich. A proponent of eugenics, Darré openly advocated the use of foreign slave labour as a supplement to German farming and food production. Unspecified health issues and a fall from grace with Himmler forced him to resign in 1942. Darré was later tried on seven counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity at Nuremberg, receiving a prison sentence of seven years. He was released due to ill health in 1950 and died of liver cancer on 5 September 1943 in Goslar.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"eMedals","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46130296127765,"sku":"G47493.RL1","price":675.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0713\/9105\/2053\/files\/c20239_mnc9710_1.jpg?v=1692895524"},{"product_id":"germany-ss-a-hiag-missing-persons-report-for-ss-schutze-friedrich-preuss-g47576rl1","title":"Germany, Ss.
