The original owner of the book was Volkhard Stankat, born in Borkenwalde, who joined the DJ on April 20, 1941 and passed the so called “Pimpfenprobe”, the admission exam of the DJ on August 15, presumably of the same year. He served in Jungzug 4 of Fähnlein 16 in Jungbann 37. The album is divided into four parts, reflecting the four years of service in the DJ between ages 10 and 14. Several pictures that the album used to contain are now missing. The first year contains collectible pictures that are all connected to the NSDAP and military, mostly to the DJ and HJ. The second and third year, however, feature period photos of a US soldier who apparently repurposed the album for his own use. An interesting private photo album featuring an array of wartime and postwar images from the personal record of a Stuka pilot serving with Sturzkampfgeschwader 2 (StG 2) “Immelmann”. It is constructed of a heavy card stock binding with a lemon-yellow woven exterior liner. The interior content consists of 30 off-white card stock pages, each separated by an intact wax paper liner to ensure protection of the images. The first third of the album is pasted with black-and-white images of the family life of the owner, presented in both postcard and smaller sizes, showing a variety of friends and relatives at home and on vacation in alpine terrain and cities. The content then shifts to images of the owner’s wartime career, and features a mix of 48 private and period reproduced images of life in service with StG 2. The former includes photos of the owner in uniform alongside other StG personnel and wearing a variety of decorations, with many depicting the personnel of the unit in the Mediterranean, Balkans, and Soviet Union. These include commemorative images of Oberst Dr. Ernst Kupfer, including some depicting him on the occasion of his 600th combat mission. This is supplemented by 12 postwar images showing the owner at a meeting of veterans with other Luftwaffe veterans. It is also accompanied by loose content, including 17 aerial reconnaissance photos, all printed on marked wartime Leonar paper, with all but two retaining paper labels bearing handwritten information. In addition, the album features two Feldpost letters retaining original envelopes dated to 1942, three loose photos, and an unused wartime postcard. After finishing high school, he visited a trade school from 1938 to 1941 and learned to become a butcher. However, out of a sense of duty and patriotism, Starzecki volunteered for service in the army on September 19, 1941 at the age of 17 years and 4 months. Between November 1941 and February 1942, he received his basic military training in the 6th Company of the 2nd U boat Training Detachment, and between February and May his U boat education and training in the 7th Company of the 1st U boat Training Division. From May to June, Starzecki was placed in the 8th Company of the 2nd U boat Training Detachment. It is possible that during this time he was trained to be the ship’s cook. His active wartime duty began on July 1, 1942 on U 160, part of the 10th U boat Flotilla. U 160 had already been on two patrols. Starzecki was part of the crew during the third to fifth patrol. On August 1, 1942 he received his first promotion to Matrosengefreiter (Lance Corporal of the Kriegsmarine). He was awarded the U boat Badge and the Iron Cross 2nd Class on December 13 of the same year. On July 1, 1943 Starzecki made Matrosenobergefreiter (Senior Lance Corporal of the Kriegsmarine). Only two weeks later, U 160 was sunk in the Atlantic, south of the Azores, on 14 July, 1943 by aircraft of squad VC-9 from the escort carrier USS Santee. The entire crew of 51 men perished. On July 20, U 160 was officially declared lost. However, it took until May of 1944 until Starzecki was officially declared dead and ruled out to have survived as a POW.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"eMedals","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46133963882773,"sku":"G33684.RL8","price":1900.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0713\/9105\/2053\/files\/m_522_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1.jpg?v=1768330607"},{"product_id":"germany-wehrmacht-a-1942-veteran-officers-evening-commemorative-photo-album-m0526-1rl1","title":"Germany, Wehrmacht.
