Cross, in silver gilt and enamels, 48x55mm, unmarked, of very fine quality manufacture, extremely fine condition. Mounted on a full length of original sash. Star, in silver, silver gilt and enamels, 95mm, maker marked on reverse \"Anton Reitterer, Wien\". Of very fine quality manufacture, extremely fine condition. Extremely rare set of insignia, only five Grand Cross First Class with Eagle awarded, as follows: Dr. Kurt Schuschnigg, Austrian Bundeskanzler, in 1936; Benito Mussolini, in 1936; Julius Gombos von Jakka, in 1936; Dr. Justinian Seredi, in 1937; Dr. Koleman Daranyi, in 1937 (the last three Hungarian recipients). One of the recipients, Italian Duce Benito Mussolini, was a major factor contributing to the institution of this Order, when he refused to accept Austrian Golden Merit Decoration First Class (cross with red enamel) from Austrian delegation, as this Order \"was intended for Ministers\" and therefore not suitable for Duce. As Mussolini was not eligible for the Grand Cross of the Austrian Merit Order (black enameled cross) intended for Presidents and Heads of the States, Austrian leadership, in order to satisfy Duce, made a decision to establish the Grand Cross First Class with Eagle, a grade just below the Grand Cross of the Austrian Merit Order (black enameled cross). Needles to say Duce was satisfied with this outcome and accepted the award in 1936.","brand":"eMedals","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46109785030933,"sku":"EU0959","price":7000.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0713\/9105\/2053\/files\/a8080002.jpg?v=1692841074"},{"product_id":"a-first-class-grand-cross-breast-star-for-merit-of-the-republic-of-austria-type-ii-1952-eu14202","title":"A First Class Grand Cross Breast Star For Merit Of The Republic Of Austria; Type Ii 1952","description":"A fine quality example of a Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria by Anton Reitterer. Padilla Nervo made history as Mexico’s first Ambassador to the United Nations and served as a member of the United Nations Security Council. In 1951, he reached another milestone by becoming President of the General Assembly during its sixth session. After his time at the UN, Padilla Nervo held several key positions in Mexico’s government, serving in the Ministries of Education, Interior, and Labor. His distinguished career continued with his election to the International Court of Justice, where he served as a judge from 1964 to 1973—becoming only the second Mexican to hold that position.
