He signed his Volunteer Units of the Union Defence Force Attestation Paper as a Private, on June 4, 1940 in Durban, at the age of 27, naming his next-of-kin as his wife, Eileen Phyllis Larsson of Durban, stating that he had four years' previous military service with the 1st Royal Durban Light Infantry, that he was married, that he had one eight month old child and that his trade was that of French Polisher. He disembarked at Port Tewfik, Egypt on July 2, 1941 for service in the North African theatre. He was later admitted to the hospital on August 30, 1941 for a short time, and later, in March 1942, admitted to 11th Field Ambulance with a Peptic Ulcer. His condition persisted and his hospitalization continued, with Larsson invalided to South Africa, embarking Port Tewfik, aboard the S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam on November 22, 1942, to seek further treatment. He was promoted to Acting Corporal (January 1, 1946) and one month later, Acting Sergeant (February 1, 1946), later admitted to Springfield Military Hospital in Durban on May 25th for an additional five weeks, before being discharged onJune 4th. He signed his Union Defence Force Attestation Paper as a Private (77843) with the 5th South African Infantry Brigade, 2nd Regiment Botha, on September 9, 1940 at Barberton, South Africa, at the age of 23, naming his next-of-kin as his father, J.H. Mostert of Rustenburg, South Africa, stating that he had no previous military service, that his nationality was \"Afrikanen\" (African), that his profession was \"Boer\" and that he was Single. On his Index Card, he named his next-of-kin as his mother, Mrs. G.M.S. Mostert of Rustenburg. He embarked Durban, South Africa aboard the S.S. Llandaff Castle on November 21, 1940, disembarking at Mombasa, Kenya on November 27th. It is worthy to note, that two years later, on November 30, 1942, the unescorted Llandaff Castle was sunk by two torpedoes fired from a u-boat on the same run (Mobassa to Durban). While in Kenya, he officially joined the 5th South African Infantry Brigade, 2nd Regiment Botha on December 12, 1940, embarking Mombasa on April 19, 1941 aboard the S.S. Dunera, arriving in Suez, Egypt on May 3rd. Mostert was hospitalized on September 5, 1942, admitted to No. 15 South Africa Field Ambulance with \"Pyrexia\" (fever) for a period of one month, before being discharged on October 6th, just in time for participation in the Second Battle of El Alamein. The 5th South African Infantry Brigade, 2nd Regiment Botha was part of the 1st South African Division in October of 1942. He then rejoined his original unit on November 17th. He left Suez on January 4, 1943 for return to South Africa. In his Service Records, he was declared Absent Without Leave on November 8, 1944, then declared a \"Deserter\" at the Army Combat Training Centre in South Africa the same day, his \"Deserter\" status repeated on January 4, 1944. He did return to the regiment and resumed training, before leaving for a second trip to the North African theatre, from Durban, aboard the Reina del Pacifico on April 5, 1944, arriving in Suez on April 21st. He was posted to the 9th Battalion upon arrival and after five months in North Africa, left Suez on September 17, 1945, arriving in Durban on October 1st. Mostert was discharged upon partial demobilization on November 2, 1945, credited with having served four years and 330 days in the Union Defence Force, his character noted as \"Good\". He was declared Absent Without Leave on December 26, 1943 but returned to his unit, 6 Cape Corps on January 4, 1944. Private Cupido embarked Durban aboard the S.S. Salween on September 11, 1944, disembarking at Suez, Egypt on October 4th. He served with 6 Cape Corps for fifteen months in Palestine and the Middle Eastern theatre, before embarking Suez on January 9, 1946, disembarking at Durban on January 20th. Private Daniel Cupido, Cape Corps was taken on strength at C.C.D.D.
