R.M.L.I.); Defence Medal; War Medal 1939-45; Imperial Service Medal, George VI (WILLIAM ROBERT JERRAM); and Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (PLY. 10561. WILLIAM R. JERRAM, PRIVATE, R.M.L.I.). Naming is officially impressed on six medals. Board mounted, extremely fine. Also included is a duotang folder with his military biography, copies of his service records and eleven ship photographs. Footnote: William Robert Jerram was born on June 3, 1883 in St. Lukes, Derby, England, whose trade was that of a Bottler upon entry into military life. His career began at the Recruit Depot (June 2, 1901), with eight stints to follow with Plymouth Division (1901, 1903, 1904, 1906, 1910, 1911 (2) and 1912). He saw service with H.M.S. Benbow (1902, Battleship), Impregnable (1904, Training Ship for Boy Seamen at Devonport), Diana (1904, Cruiser), Amphitrite (1907, Cruiser), Kent (1907, Cruiser), Niobe (1909, Cruiser), Donegal (1911, Cruiser), Victory (1911, Shore Base Portsmouth), Donegal again (1911), Magestic (1912, Battleship) and Impregnable again (1912). After his term of enlistment had expired on June 5, 1913, he went into the Royal Fleet Reserve. At the outbreak of World War I, he was recalled to service and posted to the Cruiser H.M.S. Talbot. His term on this ship was short, as he almost immediately was drafted to the Battleship H.M.S. Albion, serving out of Devonport as part of the Channel Squadron. In 1915, the Albion was sent to the west coast of Africa and the Cape of South Africa. In 1916, Jerram was posted to Dreel Castle, a base in England and to Thalia, another base. His final ship was the Cruiser H.M.S. Crescent, a ship that had seen its better days and was now a depot ship at Scapa Flow. He also had five additional stints with Plymouth Division (1914 (2), 1916 (2) and 1919). Once recalled, he obtained the additional years required to fulfill fifteen years' service and qualify for the RNLSGC Medal. On his return to civilian life, Jerram must have been employed in the Civil Service, as he qualified for the Imperial Service Medal for twenty-five years' faithful service. During World War II, he evidently served the three years required to qualify for the Defence Medal in some civil defence organization. He was also awarded the War Medal 1939-45, probably in the Home Guard and in addition, the British Empire Medal, Civil, no doubt for gallantry during WWII. He was cited in the London Gazette for his BEM, Civil (January 1, 1945) and for his ISM (May 28, 1948). Upon retirement as a First Class Coaling Master, he was recognized for his loyal and meritorious service at H.M. Dockyard, Devonport, an honour that made he and his wife, Florena, proud. (BGR222)
