Bavaria, Kingdom. A Royal Merit Order of St. Michael, III Class Cross, by G & S, c.1910

(Könglicher Verdienstorden vom heiligen Michael 3. Klasse). Instituted on 29 September 1693. (Issued 1887-1918). A gilded silver cross with blue-enamelled arms, the obverse with an oval disc at its centre depicts St. Michael slaying the dragon, his shield reads “QUIS UT DEUS” (“WHO IS LIKE GOD”), the reverse with a round centre inscribed “VIRTUTI” (“VIRTUE”), maker mark on side between 3 o’clock and 6 o’clock arms “G&S,” with silver fineness stamped “938,” Dutch silver hallmark letter “V” on loop, measures 39.28 mm (w) x 64.11 mm (h), weighs 27.5 grams, displays old pleasing patina, showing gilt wear, suspended from a hollow swivel crown suspension from a horizontally pierced ball and loop, with period replacement ribbon, and in extremely fine condition.
