Austria, Imperial. An Order of Franz Joseph, Commander with War Decoration & Swords, by V. Mayer, c.1915

(Franz Joseph Orden, Stern zum Komturkreuz). Instituted on 2 December 1849 by Franz Joseph I. Type II. (1914-1918 Issue). A silver star consisting of eight multiple rayed arms, with a gilded bronze laurel wreath (war decoration) riveted to each arm, obverse centre features a red enamelled cross with the imperial double-headed eagle, partially enameled in black, shown in the angles of the cross, the two heads of the eagle bear in their beaks a loop of chain with the emperor’s motto VIRIBUS UNITIS (WITH UNITED FORCES) applied at the lower edge, the white-enamelled central medallion shows the letters FJ for Franz Joseph, surmounted by the Austrian imperial crown and crossed swords, the reverse centre presents a principle pin assembly, maker marked with the cartouche of Vinc. Mayer’s Söhne of Wien, star’s body stamped on reverse with C for Commander’s star, pin hallmarked with a star, measuring 78.90 mm (w) x 78.47 mm (h), weighing 67.9 grams, swords later period added, and in near extremely fine condition.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
