An Excessively Rare German Naval Air Gunner Badge, 1918
An Excessively Rare German Naval Air Gunner Badge, 1918; badge in gilded bras, hollow stamped, unmarked but typical style by maker Meybauer, Berlin; measures 45.6mm(w) x 71.94mm(h), weighs 26.1 grams, in slightly worn condition. Footnote: by 1918, Germany had only a handful of large aircraft for naval operations, and these were the aircraft intended to carry air gunners, among the other crew. This badge is likely a sample of planed production (a prototype), or may have been ordered by an air gunner privately, as a private purchase badge. It is only such badge known to exist, and it is pictured in C. Baldes book “Aircrew Badges and Honor Prizes of the Flying Troops 1913-20”, p. 523-4.
