A Hungarian Sports Federation Tournament Medal; Bronze Grade

A Hungarian Sports Federation Tournament Medal; Bronze Grade - c. 1920s Bronze, obverse illustrating the radiant cross of St Stephen upon a crown and three hills from the Hungarian coat of arms within a ring inscribed "DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI" (Latin from the Roman poet Horace - It is Sweet and Fitting to Die for One's Country), with a laurel wreath border, reverse illustrating an upward-pointing sword with a laurel branch imposed on the map of Hungary within a ring inscribed "VRSENYDIJA" (Tournament or Races) within an outer ring inscribed "KÖZÉPFOKU ISKOLÁK SPORTKÖREINEK" (Intermediate Schools Sports Federation), 36 mm, on a period triangular ribbon, residue in the recessed areas from cleaning, contact marks and surface wear, very fine. Footnote: The style of the design of the medal places it firmly in the 1920s or 1930s, as do the sentiments that link a schools sports events with the concept of dying gloriously for one’s country.
