A certificate, measuring 147x210mm, extremely fine condition with folding crease. The document has been denazified. It states that the High Seas Fleet Badge has been awarded to Matrosenobergefreiter (Senior Lance Corporal in the Kriegsmarine) Gerald Hiemer for participation in the war missions of auxiliary cruiser “Orion”. The document is dated to May 5, 1945 and signed in black ink by a Vice Admiral and Commander-in-chief of the Training Association of the Fleet, the name is indecipherable.
Footnote: “Orion” was mostly deployed to the Pacific. Since 1945, the ship was used to transport German refugees from the east across the Baltic Sea to German ports. On May 4, 1945 while transporting the crew of the battleship “Schlesien”, the ship was hit by two Russian bombs from an aerial attack off Swinemünde and was beached on a sandbank, burning. 150 of the 4,000 on board were lost.
