A First War Mark II 102nd Infantry Battalion Helmet

British-made, steel, non-magnetic, in brownish-green, originally with a smooth finish, red square above a green rectangle painted on the front, the square representative of the 102nd Infantry Battalion, the rectangle representative of the 4th Canadian Division. The protective edge of the helmet in a magnetic steel. Inside, steel-framed cradle supporting a blackened canvas liner with underlying cotton linen support and leather backer, mesh support with drawstring, stamped "HS 65" ("HS" indicating the manufacturer, Hadfield Limited of Sheffield (1916-1919); and "65" the steel batch number) on the underside of the helmet at the back, with pressed khaki fabric and rubber ring in the dome. The original leather chinstrap along with its hardware remains intact, the chinstrap remaining relatively supple. Helmet measures 297 mm x 307 mm x 120 mm, exhibiting moderate bubbling and contact marks on the exterior, free of dents, fragmentation of the pressed fabric, wear evident on the chinstrap from active use, as worn
