A First War Commemorative Medal of the Hanover Military

A First War Hannoverian Commemorative War Medal - Bronze, obverse illustrating a galloping horse with a branch of three oak leaves above and the dates 1914/18 below inside the outline of a cross, reverse inscribed "NIEDER SACHSENS SOHNEN DIE DANKBARE HEIMAT" (Grateful Fatherland to the Sons of Lower Saxony) inside an open-ended wreath of oak leaves, surrounded by the inscription "HANNOVERSCHER LANDES-KRIEGERVERBAND" (Hanover Military Association), 33.5 mm, original ribbon, small green oxidation spot on the reverse, extremely fine. Footnote: This medal was issued between 1920 and 1933 as a remembrance token, dedicated to the participation of Hanover subjects in the First World War and was instituted by the Hanover Military Association in 1920. Applicants had to present military papers proving their war experience to Association authorities, who issued an award document upon approval. As per other Weimar-era badges, the medal had to be privately purchased by the veterans themselves.
