A Boer War Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) Bayonet with Frog

A Boer War Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) Model P1888 Bayonet with Frog -  Bayonet features a 305 mm long steel blade, with a dull edge and a semi-sharp tip, dated "8 ,96" (August 1896) above the maker mark "SANDERSON, SHEFFIELD" on one side of the ricasso, marked with an upward pointing British Broad Arrow, a Crown, numbered "3" over "25" and marked with an "X" on the other side of the ricasso, marked twice with a Crown and numbered "3" over "25" on the spine beside the ricasso markings, incorporating a heavy steel crossguard with muzzle ring, the crossguard numbered "183", wooden plates embedded into either side of the handle and held in place via brass screws and central pins, measuring 67 mm x 425 mm overall. Accompanied by its black leather wrapped scabbard, unmarked, with a metal locket at the blade entry end and a metal chape at the closed end, with heavy, durable, quality stitching along the leather seam, plus an oval frog stud on the locket, measuring 38 mm x 325 mm. The leather frog has a distinctly Canadian design with two loops, one for the housing of the bayonet in its scabbard, the other designed to hold a trenching tool. It is stamped "RCR" (Royal Canadian Regiment) and "647" on the reverse, with a hand-gouged slit added in the loop above the stampings, measuring 110 mm x 227 mm. Metal parts on the bayonet and scabbard are magnetic, with all three items exhibiting contact marks and surface wear from active use. A terrific Boer War collectible, very fine. (C:4)
