A Spanish Civil War Period Patriotic Suffering Medal for Foreigners, Silver Grade for NCOs and Enlisted Men
A Spanish Civil War Period Patriotic Suffering Medal for Foreigners, Silver Grade for NCOs and Enlisted Men; Two-piece construction, silvered bronze, 37 mm x 38.5 mm, original ribbon on a traditional Spanish rectangular hanger with pinback, light contact, near extremely fine. Footnote: The medal was awarded to the wounded. Two variants of the medal exist: the gilt and enamelled one for officers, the silvered one for other ranks. A special ribbon was instituted for foreigners, yellow with two vertical thin red stripes as illustrated here, to be awarded to volunteers who fought with Franco troops. Some sources state that 183 German wound badges were awarded to Legion Condor soldiers, which means that around the same number received the Spanish medal. The medal was also awarded to around 300 soldiers who died in Spain.
